Joshua Thomas "Josh" Sargent (born February 20, 2000 in O'Fallon , Missouri ) is an American football player . He is under contract with Werder Bremen in Germany and is a national team player in his home country.

childhood

Sargent was born on February 20, 2000 in O'Fallon , Missouri . His parents had both played football at the college level. He himself began playing soccer when he was eight when he joined the Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. He finished second in a United States Soccer Federation residency program in Florida , making him the second best high school footballer in the country.

Career

In the club

Sargent began his active career at the Scott Gallagher Development Club in St. Louis, Missouri . After attracting the attention of a few clubs at Nike's international friendlies in 2016, MLS franchise Sporting Kansas City secured the rights to the young Sargent. Despite the young age, this was possible for the club because St. Louis is located in its catchment area. In October of the same year he had a trial training session with the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven , before playing for Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 in January 2017 . At this point he was also nominated for the US U-20 national team.

Beginning in 2018 took Sargent at the winter training camp the second team of Werder Bremen in part. He then took part in the training of Florian Kohfeldt's first team a few times . On February 20, 2018, Sargent signed a professional contract so that he was eligible to play for Werder Bremen from July 1, 2018. For the 2018/19 season he was accepted into the professional squad and is also part of the squad of the second team that plays in the fourth-tier Regionalliga Nord .

Sargent made his Bundesliga debut for Werder Bremen against Fortuna Düsseldorf on December 7, 2018 , when he came on for Milot Rashica in the 76th minute of the game . He scored his first Bundesliga goal two minutes later with a header to the final score of 3-1 for Werder Bremen.

In the national team

Sargent made his first international experience with the U14 national team in 2013 when he was invited to a training camp.

In 2015 he attended the residency program of the U17 national team and in 2017 became part of the CONCACAF U17 championship squad. There he scored five goals. Surprisingly, his performance made him part of the official squad of the U20 national team for the 2017 World Cup . There he scored four goals in five games, making him the youngest American to score in a U20 World Cup.

On November 7, 2017, he was nominated for a friendly game of the senior national team against Portugal , but not used. Nevertheless, he became the first American player to be nominated for the U17, U20 and men's national team in a calendar year. On May 28, 2018, he made his debut for the United States men's national team in a friendly against Bolivia . In the 3-0 success of his home country, he scored his first goal in the 52nd minute of the game, which led to the interim 2-0.
