In the club

Niklas Moisander began his career as a professional footballer with Turku PS from his hometown. From there he moved in 2003 together with his twin brother Henrik to the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam , which he describes as his "dream club". In his three years with the capital city, however, he could not prevail and did not appear in the league, but only played for Jong Ajax, the club's second team.

In summer 2006 Moisander decided to move to the second division club FC Zwolle . There he became a top performer of the team. In 2008 he was signed by the top Dutch club AZ Alkmaar , where he was a regular player straight away and with whom he won the Dutch championship in his first season . After four years in Alkmaar, he was signed by Ajax Amsterdam in mid-August 2012 for a transfer fee of three million euros and signed a three-year contract until the end of June 2015. Moisander also won the Dutch championship with Ajax in 2012/13 in his first year. For the 2015/16 season he moved to Sampdoria Genoa .

For the 2016/17 season Moisander moved to the German first division club Werder Bremen . He scored his first league goal for Werder Bremen on November 3, 2017, the 11th matchday of the 2017/18 season, when he scored 1-1 after a corner in the 2-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt .

For the 2019/20 season , Moisander was appointed the new team captain by head coach Florian Kohfeldt .

His contract in Bremen is valid until June 2021.

National team

On May 29, 2008, he made his debut in the Finnish national team in a friendly against Turkey in Duisburg , after having previously played in every single junior national team in his country of birth. He scored his first goal for the Finnish national football team on October 10, 2009 in a 2-1 win in the qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup against Wales . Moisander could neither qualify for a European championship nor for a world championship finals with the national team.

As team captain , Moisander announced his resignation from the Finnish national team in November 2017.
