Ömer Toprak (born July 21, 1989 in Ravensburg ) is a Turkish football player . He is under contract with the German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen . He has been active for the Turkish national team since 2011 and previously competed for the German U19s .

family

Ömer Toprak was born and raised as the son of Turkish parents in Ravensburg in Upper Swabia . He has two older brothers and one older sister. His brother Harun played for the Turkish first division club Sivasspor and in Switzerland for FC Schaffhausen .

Club career

Toprak started playing football at TSB Ravensburg in 1994 and moved to FV Ravensburg in 2001 .

In 2005 Toprak moved from Ravensburg to the youth boarding school of SC Freiburg . In 2007 he received a professional contract. In the 2007/08 season Toprak was with the second team of SC Freiburg Oberliga championship and with the A-Juniors German champions . He made his competitive debut for the professional team on the 2nd match day of the 2008/09 season against VfL Osnabrück . Since then he has been able to establish himself as a regular player and was involved in the team's promotion to the Bundesliga .

On June 9, 2009 Toprak was seriously injured in an accident on a kart track near Freiburg im Breisgau when a tank exploded in a collision with another vehicle. He was so badly burned that he was sidelined for months and threatened to end his career. On January 6, 2010 Toprak made his comeback in a friendly against Spanish second division club FC Elche , and ten days later he made his Bundesliga debut in the away game of Freiburg at Hamburger SV . In the 0-2 defeat he was substituted on in the 65th minute.

Toprak moved to Bayer Leverkusen for the 2011/12 season , where he received a five-year contract, which he extended in January 2014 for two more seasons until the end of June 2018. From 2015 to 2017 Toprak represented the Leverkusen team captain Lars Bender when he was not on the field. The Turk made 203 competitive games for Bayer 04 in six years, in which he scored seven goals and set up five more.

On February 5, 2017, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund announced Toprak's move to BVB for the 2017/18 season. There he made his competitive debut in a 2-0 win against Hertha BSC on August 26, 2017, the second match day of the 2017/18 season , when he came on for Sokratis in the 40th minute of the game . As a result, the defensive player could not earn a regular place. In August 2019 Toprak won his first title with the club when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern Munich , was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . After the victorious cup game on August 9, 2019 in Uerdingen , where he sat on the bench, Toprak was released one day later to meet with his new club Werder Bremen .

Bremen had loaned him for the 2019/20 season. Due to an injury, the central defender missed most of the first half of the season and was only able to get active again for Werder at the start of the second half. After eight more competitive games, the Turk suffered a ligament injury in the cup quarter-final match against Eintracht Frankfurt after a foul by his opponent Filip Kostić and fell out again and was only back in the matchday squad on the last matchday. After the successful relegation against 1. FC Heidenheim Werder was able to hold the class, whereby the purchase option contained in the loan agreement took effect.

National team career

Toprak was a German U19 national player and took part in the U19 European Championship in the Czech Republic in 2008 with the national team. Here he scored the goal to make it 2-0 against defending champions Spain on his debut in the group stage. With the German selection, he became European champion with a 3-1 win in the final against Italy.

On September 27, 2011, Toprak applied for Turkish citizenship in order to apply to FIFA to change associations to Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu . Three days later, he was appointed to the Turkish national team for the first time for two European Championship qualifiers against Germany and Azerbaijan . On November 15, 2011 Toprak made his A international debut for Turkey in the second leg of the playoff qualifiers for the European Championship 2012 against Croatia at the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb .

"Pistol affair"

In October 2013 after the Turkish national team's World Cup qualifier against the Dutch team , Gökhan Töre stormed into the room of his teammates Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Toprak and threatened them with a gun. The target of the attack was a friend of Toprak, who was also in the room.

The Turkish press wrote that after this incident, Çalhanoğlu and Toprak had given the national team's coaching staff an ultimatum to stay away from the national team if Töres was nominated. For a long time after this event, Töre and the two victims were never in the team squad at the same time. After national coach Fatih Terim invited Töre again as part of two European Championship qualifiers alongside Çalhanoğlu and Toprak, the former two signed off due to injury. This fact ensured that this topic was taken up again in the specialist press. After there was no official confirmation for this incident for a long time, Çalhanoğlu's father confirmed in a newspaper interview the armed threats to his son and Topraks from fates and stated that both players and Nuri Şahin were upset about this action. But he contradicted the rumors of an ultimatum and emphasized that the players had actually canceled due to injury and had not used this fact as an excuse. Hakan Çalhanoğlu reported on the attack on October 18, 2014 in the current sports studio .

In March 2015 Toprak and Çalhanoğlu - as well as Töre - were nominated by Terim. However, Toprak canceled his participation in the European Championship qualifier against the Netherlands and the friendly against Luxembourg and declared his national team career over. Up to this point, Toprak had appeared in 23 games for Turkey and scored two goals.

At the end of September 2016 Toprak was recalled to the Turkish national team.
