Johannes Eggestein (born May 8, 1998 in Hanover ) is a German football player . The striker is under contract with Werder Bremen . He is the younger brother of Maximilian Eggestein , who also played there .

Career

In the club

Johannes Eggestein is the son of the former soccer player Karl Eggestein , who worked for TSV Havelse u. a. played in the second division . His older brother Maximilian is also a soccer player for Werder Bremen.

Eggestein learned to play football at TSV Schloß Ricklingen and played at TSV Havelse until 2013 . He has been with Werder Bremen since 2013 . In three consecutive youth years for Werder, he was the top scorer in the B-Juniors and A-Juniors Bundesliga.

On June 2, 2016, he signed his first professional contract, which is dated until 2019. He made his debut for the U23 team on matchday five (August 26, 2016) in the 3rd division in a 4-2 win against VfL Osnabrück , in which he scored one goal. He played his first competitive game for the first team on August 21, 2016 in the DFB-Pokal game against Sportfreunde Lotte . There he was substituted on in the 62nd minute. At the beginning of March 2017, he sustained an injury to the syndesmosis tape during a DFB course and was out for the rest of the season. In the 2-0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich on August 26, 2017, the 2nd matchday of the 2017/18 season, Eggestein made his debut in the 1st Bundesliga for the Bremen team. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on the 7th matchday of the 2018/19 season against VfL Wolfsburg, just three minutes after being substituted on.

On April 8, 2019, Eggestein extended his contract in Bremen, which was running out at the end of the season.

National team

Eggestein, who had already played in the German U15 and U16 teams, made his debut in the U17 national team on September 10, 2014 . At the U17 European Championship in 2015 , he was part of the DFB squad and reached the final with the team. As a result, the team qualified for the U17 World Cup in 2015 , in which Eggestein was awarded the Silver Shoe as the second best goalscorer . On September 2, 2016, he made his debut for the German U19 national team . On September 1, 2017, he made his debut with his brother Maximilian for the German U21 national team and scored the goal to make the final 2-1 against Hungary two minutes after being substituted on.

Eggestein has been the team captain of the U21 national team since 2019 .
