Theodor "Theo" Gebre Selassie (born December 24, 1986 in Třebíč , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech football player . The right defender is under contract with Werder Bremen and was a Czech international .
Career

Gebre Selassie was born in Třebíč as the son of an Ethiopian and a Czechoslovak woman ; he began playing football in Velké Meziříčí . In 1998 he moved to FC Vysočina Jihlava . From 2005, the defensive player was used in the B team, which played in the third-rate MSFL . However, he got little match practice and was therefore initially loaned to his youth club FC Velké Meziříčí, who played a league lower, until the winter break. In early 2006, the defender returned to Jihlava , but suffered an injury in preparation for the second half of the season and was released again to Velké Meziříčí.
After the end of the season, Jihlava ordered him back, and the young defender now also got match experience in the A-team in the 2nd division . In the first games of the 2007/08 season he was one of the best players in FC Vysočina Jihlava, which earned him an appearance in the newly formed Czech U-21 team. He was the first dark-skinned Czech national player. At the end of September 2007 he was signed by Slavia Prague and signed a four-year contract with the Champions League participant . In September 2008 Gebre Selassie moved to Slovan Liberec on loan . After one season, he was signed in July 2009. With Slovan Liberec he became champions in the 2011/12 season .
After the departure of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2012 against Portugal , SV Werder Bremen signed Gebre Selassie for the 2012/13 season . On November 13, 2019, he prematurely extended his contract in Bremen, which was valid until 2020.
He mainly scores his goals with a header , as he has great jumping ability.
National team
At the 2016 European Championships in France, he was part of the Czech squad and was used in the first group game , which was lost 1-0 to Spain . It was his only tournament game and he was eliminated from the tournament with the team after the group stage.
On May 21, 2019, Selassie resigned from the national team.
