The 2012/13 Bundesliga was the 50th season of the top German division in men's football . It started on August 24, 2012 like the first season 1963/64 with a home game of the German champions Borussia Dortmund against Werder Bremen (2: 1) and ended with the 34th matchday on May 18, 2013 January 2013 the season was interrupted by the winter break. On the 28th matchday, FC Bayern Munich secured the 23rd championship in the club's history and the fastest title win in the history of the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt .
The top three of the season are directly qualified for the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League according to the UEFA five-year ranking, the fourth-placed will start in the qualification for the Champions League . The teams in fifth and sixth place qualify for the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League .
Season course
Championship decision
After two years without a title, FC Bayern dominated the Bundesliga again this season under Jupp Heynckes. On the first day of the match he took the lead with a 3-0 win against new league player Greuther Fürth and held this position until the end of the season. Eight wins at the start of the season set a new record; the only defeat of the season followed on the ninth matchday, at home against Leverkusen. Otherwise there was only twice against Borussia Dortmund and once against 1. FC Nürnberg and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Master Borussia Dortmund also started the season strongly under Jürgen Klopp , but could never be dangerous for Bayern. Above all, the increased number of 42 goals conceded - last season there were only 25 - prevented a more sovereign season in which there were some unexpected results, such as the defeat against Hamburger SV. The lowest standings were sixth on days three and five. On the twentieth matchday, BVB took second place and held it until the end of the season.
Bayer Leverkusen initially played rather poorly. After the thirteenth place on the fourth match day, however, an improvement began, which ultimately led to the battle for second place against Dortmund for the entire second half of the season. However, when Dortmund lost, Leverkusen repeatedly lost points, so they stayed in third place. The Werkself were trained by a duo of Sascha Lewandowski and Sami Hyypiä , who did not yet have a coaching license. With his twenty-five goals, Stefan Kießling was the first Leverkusen top scorer since 1997/98 . He also overtook Ulf Kirsten's club record of 22 goals in one season.
FC Schalke 04 had a good debut and were able to take second place as Bayern pursuit from the ninth to the twelfth match day. On the 16th matchday they fell back from the Champions League ranks for the first time. A matchday later, despite an unexpectedly strong group stage in the Champions League , Huub Stevens was sacked when the club was in seventh place. Under Jens Keller , the club even slipped to tenth place before it stabilized again. In the end, they almost had to give up fourth place to SC Freiburg, but were able to keep them by winning a direct duel.
As one of the biggest surprises of the season, SC Freiburg reached fifth place. The Breisgauer coached by Christian Streich occupied a Europa League place for the first time from matchday 21. From the 28th matchday onwards, they did not fall back from this and could even have earned a place for the Champions League qualification in a direct duel against Schalke 04 on the last matchday. Freiburg lost 2-1 at home.
Newcomers Eintracht Frankfurt also played a very strong season under coach Armin Veh : Eintracht celebrated four wins in a row at the start of the season and was in second place from the second to the eighth match day. Then they were on the Champions League course for months up to the 26th matchday, but after a not so strong second half of the season they were only able to secure qualification for the Europa League. Together with Bayern and Dortmund, the Frankfurters were on a European cup all season long. It was the best season of Eintracht since 1993/94 and the first time since the championship of 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the season 1997/98 that a newcomer qualified directly for a European Cup participation.
midfield
Hamburger SV with its coach Thorsten Fink was already considered a possible relegation before the start of the season. The Hanseatic responded with the long-awaited re-engagement of the Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart . Added to this was the long-injured national goalkeeper René Adler , who was signed for a long time last season, was of immense importance to Hamburg and subsequently returned to the national team. Nevertheless, there were three defeats at the beginning of the season, which meant the penultimate place in the table. The turning point brought a victory against the champions Dortmund. From then on, Hamburg always played in the middle of the table. On the last day of the match they had a chance at the Europa League, but lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen. The best place was sixth.
Borussia Mönchengladbach played under Lucien Favre the entire season in the middle of the table and after many difficult years was able to establish itself as a typical relegation candidate in the secured field of the Bundesliga. However, the foals could not match the performances of the previous season, in which they had qualified for the Champions League - also due to the departures of Roman Neustädter , Marco Reus and Dante .
After Hannover 96 had played the first European Cup seasons in the club's history in the past two years, they were still regularly on the Europa League starting places in the first half of the season. Mainly due to the injury-related loss of numerous top performers and the less stable defense - a prime example is a 4: 5 against Schalke - it was enough for Lower Saxony, trained by Mirko Slomka , in the end only for ninth place, which is even astonishing for the third highest number of goals conceded turned out to be high. Only Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen had more goals against.
1. FC Nürnberg got off to a good start with seven points from the first three games, but then slipped to fifteenth place. There were no major relegation worries during the winter break. Nevertheless, coach Dieter Hecking was poached from VfL Wolfsburg. Under the successor duo Michael Wiesinger and Armin Reutershahn , who did not appear in public, the Franconians played a largely strong second half of the season before a weaker phase followed. On the last day of the match, the club improved by three places with a home win over Werder Bremen and finished the season in tenth place, as in the previous year.
VfL Wolfsburg had to play against relegation in the first half of the season under the former master coach Felix Magath . When the club found itself in last place, Magath was dismissed, which was temporarily followed by Lorenz-Günther Köstner with a slight upturn. Dieter Hecking was brought to Lower Saxony from Nuremberg for the winter break. Below him there was still an upward trend.
VfB Stuttgart under Bruno Labbadia improved significantly after a very weak start to the season and were in the middle of the table for the entire second half of the season. After finishing sixth in the preseason and only two home wins, however, he disappointed the fans. As a defeated cup finalist , VfB nevertheless reached the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
The 1. FSV Mainz 05 played very well under Thomas Tuchel , especially in the middle of the season and therefore had ambitions to participate in the European Cup. In the end there was quite a downward trend. The final thirteenth place in the table meant the worst placement since the fourth match day.
Relegation battle
Werder Bremen played after a good first half of the season, in which victory and defeat usually alternated and they were close to the European Cup places, ultimately one of the weakest seasons in recent years. It was not until the penultimate matchday that they managed to stay up in a draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. After that, the contract with coach Thomas Schaaf was terminated by mutual agreement after a term of fourteen years and five days. Wolfgang Rolff and Matthias Hönerbach followed him as interim trainer . Among them, however, the club ended the season with a defeat in Nuremberg.
By the winter break, FC Augsburg had only 9 points with a very defensive, uninvolved style of play and were tied with bottom Fürth in 17th place. Never before had a club managed to stay in the league with so few points at the halfway point of the season. As the seventh-best team in the second half of the season, the Swabians under Markus Weinzierl scored 24 points with a completely different, more creative attacking game. Such a point win in the first half of the season could even have been enough for the European Cup. On the last day of the match they fought for 15th place, which they otherwise only had once after the third day of play, and thus secured themselves direct relegation.
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim played the worst season of their Bundesliga time. Coach Markus Babbel was initially replaced on the relegation site by Frank Kramer on an interim basis . This was followed shortly afterwards by the new head trainer Marco Kurz . Shortly before the end of the season, this, as well as manager Andreas Müller , was fired and replaced by Markus Gisdol . From the 23rd to the 33rd match day, the club was consistently on the penultimate place. On the last day of the match they managed to reach 16th place with a 2-1 win with two penalty goals against Dortmund. In the relegation games against 1. FC Kaiserslautern the Kraichgauer won twice (3: 1 at home in the first leg, 2: 1 away in the second leg) and were thus able to keep the class.
Newcomers Fortuna Düsseldorf under Norbert Meier started with a 2-0 win against Augsburg and finished second after the first matchday. Remarkably, Fortuna Düsseldorf only conceded the first goal of the season on the sixth matchday, the first defeat of the season only followed on the seventh matchday. After the first half of the season ended in 13th place with nine points ahead of the relegation place, Fortuna Düsseldorf played the worst second half of all teams with nine points and remained without a win for twelve games at the end of the season. The penultimate place after the last game day was the only time in the season that the club was on a direct relegation zone.
The SpVgg Greuther Fürth played for the first time in the Bundesliga and thus for the first time since the football league 1962/63 again first class. After a 3-0 defeat against FC Bayern Munich, the team achieved eleventh place as the best result of the season with a win in Mainz on matchday two. From the 15th matchday to the end of the season, the Franks were consistently in last place and so rose, even though there was an unexpected upward trend towards the end of the season that didn't help anymore. Promotion coach Mike Büskens had meanwhile been dismissed, and interim coach Ludwig Preis was followed by Frank Kramer. Fürth was the first team in Bundesliga history to end a season without a home win. At home, the shamrock had only earned four points and thus undercut the negative record of Tasmania Berlin , which had achieved nine points (according to the three-point rule) at home in the 1965/66 season; the second worst home team Wolfsburg scored 17 points in front of their own audience. On the other hand, Fürth managed four wins and 17 points away, in the away table this results in eleventh place.

Venues
The venues are arranged according to the capacity of the stadiums. Compared to the previous season, the stadium capacity of the entire Bundesliga has decreased by around 50,000 seats and thus by a little more than six percent, as the capacity of the three relegated seats (174,000 seats) contrasts with a capacity of 124,000 seats for the three promoted players, which is mainly due to the The very small stadium with the promoted Fürth and the very large stadium with the relegated Hertha BSC comes into being, while the capacities of the promoted Düsseldorf and Frankfurt are about the same as those of the relegated Kaiserslautern and Cologne. The number of spectators of the previous year (13.8 million) could only have been maintained if the stadiums were occupied by over 98 percent, but the occupancy rate was only 92 percent, so that there was a significant decrease in the number of spectators in the entire Bundesliga but not in came to the individual venues.

useful information
particularities
- On the 3rd match day, all 18 clubs advertised with the slogan “ Go your way ” instead of the usual sponsor lettering on the shirt front. A similar initiative had previously only existed in the 1992/93 season with the “ My friend is a foreigner ” campaign.
- Also on matchday 3, Szabolcs Huszti ( Hannover 96 ) saw the yellow-red card after his 3-2 winner against SV Werder Bremen in stoppage time, without having been warned in the game. When celebrating the goal, he first took off his jersey and then climbed the fence.
- On October 25, 2012, VfL Wolfsburg separated from coach and manager Felix Magath after just one win and two goals from eight games . It was the first coach discharge of the season.
- On matchday 10, Simon Rolfes ( Bayer 04 Leverkusen ) saw the red card just 75 seconds after being substituted on. It is the second fastest expulsion in Bundesliga history and also the first in Rolfes' career.
- From Matchday 17 to Matchday 30, Robert Lewandowski scored at least once in the 12 games in which he was on the field; He did not play two games because of a red card suspension. This value has so far only been exceeded by Gerd Müller , who scored at least one goal in 16 consecutive games in the 1969/70 season.
Master's records
The Bayern Munich dominated the season and made many records.
- Bayern won their first eight games of the season. Bayern held the old starting record of seven wins together with Kaiserslautern and Mainz.
- On the 14th match day, the Munich team secured the autumn championship . No team in the history of the Bundesliga has managed to do this at such an early stage.
- For the first time, a Bundesliga team has only conceded one goal away from home in the first half of the season. FC Bayern Munich undercut VfB Stuttgart's previous record from the 2003/04 season, when the Swabians closed the first half of the season with two away goals.
- Bayern conceded only seven goals until matchday 21. Werder Bremen held the previous record with nine goals conceded in the 1987/88 season .
- With their 12th away win on March 16, 2013 (26th matchday), Bayern beat the previous record of 11 away wins within one season each (2011/12: Borussia Dortmund; 2010/11: Borussia Dortmund and Bayer 04 Leverkusen; 2005/06 : Hamburger SV; 2003/04: Werder Bremen). After 34 match days, the record was expanded to 15 away wins. Only in Nuremberg and Dortmund could not be won (both guest games ended 1: 1 in a draw).
- On April 6, 2013 Bayern secured the championship on matchday 28, earlier than in any other season before. They were consistently leaders from the first to the last match day.

- With 16 wins, one draw (1-1 in Dortmund) and no defeat, FC Bayern Munich surpassed Borussia Dortmund's second round record from the previous season (15 wins, two draws, no defeat). He scored 49 of a possible 51 points and thus more points in the second half of the season than the table seventh in the entire season.
- With 47 away points, FC Bayern Munich also beat Borussia Dortmund's previous record from the previous season by 10 points.
- With an away goal difference of +35 (42: 7), FC Bayern Munich also beat Borussia Dortmund's previous record +23 (36:13) from the previous season.

- With FC Bayern Munich (91) 25 points behind second-placed Borussia Dortmund (66), the Munich team exceeded the previous record of 16 points (75) behind second-placed VfB Stuttgart (59) from the 2002/03 season.
