Michael "Mike" Büskens (born March 19, 1968 in Düsseldorf ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach.

He is assistant coach of the German U16 national team and coordinator for players on loan and international activities at FC Schalke 04 .

Player career

Büskens' first club as a youth player was DSC Alemannia Düsseldorf , for which he played from 1974 to 1981 before moving to Fortuna Düsseldorf . From 1986 to 1987 he played for VfL Benrath before returning to Fortuna Düsseldorf. There he made his professional debut against FC Schalke 04 in the 2nd Bundesliga on February 18, 1989 . At the end of the season he was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga with Fortuna Düsseldorf. After playing for the club for five years, he moved to league rivals FC Schalke 04 in 1992. This is where he had his most successful period: in 1997 he won the UEFA Cup and in 2001 and 2002 the DFB Cup . In the second half of the 1999/2000 season he played for six months on loan for MSV Duisburg , but returned to FC Schalke 04 after MSV was relegated to the second division.

For the 2002/03 season Büskens was playing assistant coach of the second team of Schalke 04 under coach Gerhard Kleppinger . For health reasons, he played no active game from the second half of the 2003/04 season. By the end of 2005 he underwent seven knee operations after a patellar tendon rupture that he suffered during a preparatory game with the U23 of FC Schalke 04. He was operated on the knee ten times in total. In 2005, after an intestinal infection, he suffered life-threatening sepsis , as a result of which he was temporarily ventilated .

Trainer and functionary career

After Kleppinger had resigned as a coach for the 2005/06 season, Büskens took over the coaching position of the second team at Schalke 04. From April 13, 2008 he led the professional team as an interim coach together with Youri Mulder . After the end of the 2007/08 season , Büskens and Mulder moved back into the second tier and from July 1, 2008 they will support the new coach Fred Rutten as assistant coach. After Rutten's leave of absence on March 26, 2009, Büskens led the training of the first Schalke team with Mulder and Oliver Reck until the new coach Felix Magath started working . Since Magath had brought his two assistant coaches Seppo Eichkorn and Bernd Hollerbach from VfL Wolfsburg , Büskens left FC Schalke 04 after the 2008/09 season.

From December 27, 2009, Büskens was the successor to Benno Möhlmann as head coach at SpVgg Greuther Fürth . After 15 years in the 2nd Bundesliga, the team was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2012. Shortly thereafter, Büskens extended his contract term with the Fürthern until 2013. On February 20, 2013 he was given leave of absence. At this time, the promoted team was in last place in the table with 12 points after 22 games.

For the 2013/14 season Büskens took over the second division from Fortuna Düsseldorf . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2015. On November 30, 2013, he was given leave of absence; Fortuna was at this time in 15th place in the table in the 2nd Bundesliga.

On February 23, 2015 Büskens returned to SpVgg Greuther Fürth as a trainer . After the game association had achieved relegation in the 2nd Bundesliga with one point ahead of a relegation zone, the club ended its cooperation with Büskens on May 28, 2015.

On June 7, 2016 Büskens took over the coaching role at the Austrian record champions SK Rapid Wien . After only two wins in ten Bundesliga games, he was given leave of absence on November 7, 2016.

At the DFB he found a job in August 2018 as an assistant to Michael Prus in the U16 national team . In mid-March 2019, Büskens became an interim co-trainer of the interim coach Huub Stevens at FC Schalke 04 . A day after the appointment, the club announced that Stevens and Büskens would look after the team until the end of the season. On October 31, 2019 Büskens was again coordinator for players on loan and international activities of FC Schalke, but continues to exercise his office at the DFB.
