Gerhard Kleppinger (born March 1, 1958 in Ober-Ramstadt ) is a German soccer coach and former professional soccer player with 287 games in the first and 254 games in the second division .
Player career
In the club
Gerhard Kleppinger learned to play football at his home club, the SKG Ober-Ramstadt. From there he moved to SV Darmstadt 98 , where he stayed for five years and played 31 times (one goal) in the 1st Bundesliga and 63 times (four goals) in the 2nd Bundesliga South .
From Darmstadt he moved to Hannover 96 in the 2. Bundesliga North, where he had 79 missions in two years, in which he scored 16 goals, but could not crown this good record with promotion. Therefore, he moved to Bundesliga club Karlsruher SC for the 1982/83 season , with whom he was relegated the following year. Although he was immediately promoted again, he moved to fellow promoted FC Schalke 04 in 1984 , where he stayed for three years and played 97 times in the Bundesliga. After the relegation of Schalke, he moved to big competitor Borussia Dortmund , where he only stayed for a year.
After three more years in the Bundesliga with Bayer Uerdingen , Kleppinger moved back to his first professional club, SV Darmstadt 98, in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1991. This time was marked by two relegations, so that Kleppinger found himself with Darmstadt in the league , in which he ended his career in 1996.
In the national team
Kleppinger won with Deutsche selection bronze at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul . Apart from one assignment for the German U-21s , he has not played any other games for the DFB .
For winning the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in 1988 he received - like all German medalists - the silver laurel leaf.
Coaching career
While still active at Darmstadt, he was appointed player-coach in 1994 and held this position until he retired in 1996.
He then worked for a year as a coach at the Hessian national division club SC Viktoria Griesheim , until he joined FC St. Pauli in 1997 as an assistant coach . In November 97 he was appointed head coach, he held this position for 15 months until he was dismissed on January 31, 1999. He then went to FC Gütersloh in the Regionalliga in the summer , where he only stayed eight months and was released from his position in February 2000.
After spending a year at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , Kleppinger joined the second team at Schalke 04 in the summer of 2002, where he commuted between the regional and major leagues in his three years.
After he had coached the Hessian league club FSV Frankfurt in the preliminary round of the 2005/06 season , he was head coach of SV Darmstadt 98 since October 6, 2006 . With the "Lilien" he was relegated to the Hessenliga in 2007 and in 2008 to the new Regionalliga Süd .
On April 20, 2009, he was prematurely dismissed because of a series of unsuccessful games in the second half of the season after it was previously announced that the contract, which ended in June of the same year, would not be extended because the objectives between the club and Kleppinger were not compatible.
Instead, he returned to FSV Frankfurt as an assistant coach , initially at the side of Tomas Oral and, after his resignation, by Hans-Jürgen Boysen . On December 28, 2011, he announced his resignation as assistant coach at FSV Frankfurt.
In November 2012 Kleppinger took over the position of goalkeeping coach at SV Sandhausen again under Hans-Jürgen Boysen. In October 2018, after the release of head coach Kenan Kocak , Kleppinger temporarily took over the management of training at Sandhausen.
Kleppinger also runs a football school together with Richard Haša .
Trivia
Gerhard Kleppinger caused a stir at a game played by his former club Bayer Uerdingen against 1.FC Nürnberg when he scored three goals in the 1989/90 season: first the 1-1, then the 1-2 by own goal and finally the 3rd : 2. The game ended in a 3: 3 draw.
