Josef "Seppo" Eichkorn (born September 16, 1956 in Radolfzell on Lake Constance ) is a German soccer coach and scout .

Player career

Eichkorn played active football at SV Gallmannsweil, Borussia Kalk , BC Efferen and SV Hürth-Kendenich.

Coaching career

In 1983 he began his coaching career when he became player- coach at SV Hürth-Kendenich. He held this post until 1985.

From November 12, 1987, Eichkorn worked for FC St. Pauli , initially as assistant coach to Helmut Schulte . In the 1987/88 season he made promotion to the Bundesliga with FC St. Pauli , where the class was held for two years in a row. Since the 1990/91 season did not go so well, Schulte was dismissed in January 1991. His successor Horst Wohlers , under whom Eichkorn remained assistant coach, could not prevent relegation either. After the desired promotion was lost in the following year, Wohlers was dismissed in March 1992, and Eichkorn took over the coaching post until the end of the season. For the 1992/93 season Michael Lorkowski took over the coaching position, Eichkorn was again assistant coach. It was only after Lorkowski's dismissal in September 1992 that Eichkorn was finally head coach of FC St. Pauli. In the summer break of 1994 he was fired after a dispute with manager Jürgen Wähling.

Eichkorn then became Ewald Lienen's assistant trainer at MSV Duisburg . After Lienens dismissal in November 1994, he became assistant coach to Hans Bongartz , with whom he could not prevent relegation from the Bundesliga. In the 1995/96 season, MSV Duisburg managed to return directly to the Bundesliga, but Bongartz was dismissed shortly before the end of the season after a series of eight games in a row, and Friedhelm Funkel became the new coach . After his dismissal in March 2000, Eichkorn became an interim coach, but could not prevent relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga . For the new season, Wolfgang Frank was initially the new head coach, but after his dismissal in October 2000, Eichkorn took over the coaching post.

After the missed promotion, Eichkorn left MSV Duisburg and became assistant coach of Felix Magath at VfB Stuttgart . After his move to FC Bayern Munich in 2004 , he followed him and won the first titles of his coaching career with two championships and cup victories. When Magath was coach of VfL Wolfsburg for the 2007/08 season , Eichkorn worked there again as his assistant coach. In 2009 he became German champion with VfL Wolfsburg.

For the 2009/10 season , Eichkorn joined Felix Magath as assistant coach at FC Schalke 04 . After Magath and assistant coach Bernd Hollerbach quit their duties on March 16, 2011, Eichkorn and the other assistant coaches took over on an interim basis and sat on the bench against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on March 20, 2011 together with goalkeeping coach Bernd Dreher . Eichkorn also remained assistant coach under the new head coach Ralf Rangnick. After his resignation on September 22, 2011, he was again used as an interim coach, before Huub Stevens was introduced as the new head coach on September 27 . He then became assistant coach of the licensed players department again at his own request, because he had repeatedly stated that he was not available as head coach.

At the beginning of January 2019, Eichkorn returned to the coaching staff of FC Schalke 04 as Domenico Tedesco's assistant coach . After Tedesco was released in mid-March, Eichkorn was also released from his duties as assistant coach.

Activity as a scout

After the engagement of Peter Hermann as a new assistant coach at the side of Jens Keller for the 2013/14 season , Eichkorn switched to the position of chief scout at FC Schalke 04. His contract initially dated until 2016. Since his dismissal as assistant coach in March 2019, he has been working as a scout for the club again.

Career

Eichkorn studied at the German Sport University in Cologne .
