Coaching career
From the summer of 1989, Wohlers worked as a coach for Bayer 05 Uerdingen , where his former team-mate Rainer Bonhof was his assistant. With the Krefeld club he finished his first Bundesliga season as a coach in 14th place. Less known is that Wohlers was presented at a press conference in 1990 as the successor to the successful Sepp Piontek as the new coach of the Danish senior team. However, since Bayer Uerdingen did not allow him to be released from his contract, the appeal had to be withdrawn a week later. In the 1990/91 season he coached the club for fourteen game days before Timo Konietzka replaced him at the end of November 1990 as the responsible coach at Bayer 05. Wohlers returned to the Bundesliga that same season. On February 19, 1991 he took over from Helmut Schulte the table sixteenth FC St. Pauli , where he had already played as a player. Four wins and six draws, which the Hamburger Kiezklub was able to achieve during the remaining 17 games of the 1990/91 season, were not enough at the end of the season to stay up. After three years of membership, the club was relegated from the Bundesliga and at the same time the Bundesliga coaching career of Horst Wohlers ended, who from then on took on a number of foreign engagements (including as assistant to Horst Köppel at the Urawa Red Diamonds in the Japanese J-League ). In the 1992/93 season Wohlers coached SV Lurup .
For the 2004/05 season Wohlers took over the U17 juniors from Borussia Mönchengladbach . After Dick Advocaat's resignation as coach of the Bundesliga team, Horst Köppel, who had previously coached the U23 team, succeeded him. Wohlers, in turn, succeeded Köppel in the U23. In 2006, he and the team made it to the Regionalliga Nord. The immediate relegation followed. In April 2008, the promotion to the regional league succeeded again. Borussia Mönchengladbach then extended the contract with Wohlers for another year until June 30, 2009. In 2010 the U23 team was again relegated from the Regionalliga Nord, but was able to remain in the league, as three clubs were refused the license by the DFB. Wohlers' contract was not renewed despite the relegation achieved at the Green Table.
