The SC Paderborn 07 e. V. , short: SC Paderborn 07 or just SCP , is a registered sports club in Paderborn in the East Westphalia-Lippe region in North Rhine-Westphalia . The club colors are blue and black. The majority of its history - since the merger of the predecessor clubs in 1985 - spent the SC Paderborn 07 in the third highest German league (Oberliga, Regionalliga, 3. Liga). In 2005, the club rose to the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time , in which he played with a one-year break until the 2013/14 season. In that season, the club reached second place in the table and, despite limited financial resources, rose to the Bundesliga for the first time, relegated again after a year and was passed through to the 3rd division after another relegation the following year. Only through the license withdrawal of TSV 1860 Munich one could keep in the 3rd division. In the 2017/18 season , they rose to second place in the 2nd Bundesliga. SC Paderborn 07 finished second in the 2018/19 season in the 2nd Bundesliga and rose again to the 1st Bundesliga and then relegated again after one season. Like SC Paderborn, only seven other teams have so far made it from the 3rd division to the 2nd Bundesliga and finally to the 1st Bundesliga without staying in one of the leagues for another year.

history

Today's SC Paderborn 07 was created in 1985 under the name TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus through a merger of TuS Schloß Neuhaus and 1. FC Paderborn . Both clubs came into being through mergers.

Predecessor clubs

On August 14, 1907, 20 football fans founded the Arminia Neuhaus football club as the first football club in the Paderborn district. It forms one of the four cornerstones of today's SC Paderborn 07 e. V. The three original clubs that made up today's SC 07 were FC Preußen Paderborn from 1908, SV 07 Neuhaus , a year older, and TuS Sennelager from 1910.

From FC Prussia to 1. FC Paderborn

FC Preußen Paderborn was founded on December 1st, 1908. In 1913 the SV 1913 Paderborn split off; the rest of FC Prussia was now called VfB Paderborn, from 1920 VfJ 08 Paderborn .

SV 1913 played no significant role in the post-war period. Only in the 1955/56 season did he appear in the amateur league of Westphalia for a year, but rose immediately as thirteenth in the table. The VfJ 08, which was represented in this third highest division in 1948/49 and from 1952 to 1956 and even won the league championship in 1952, was only marginally more important.

In 1968 the two clubs reunited to form 1. FC Paderborn. This was permanently represented in the amateur league Westphalia from 1970. The best placement up to 1977 was fourth place, the worst place 13 (out of 16). In the last amateur league season 1977/78, 1. FC won the championship in its season, but failed both in the finals for the Westphalia championship against DSC Wanne-Eickel and in qualifying for the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga against Holstein Kiel .

In the 1980/81 season, the Paderborn first of the 1978 founded amateur Oberliga Westfalen . Due to the reduction of the 2. Bundesliga from two seasons to one, promotion was suspended that summer and the championship worthless. In the following years 1. FC played repeatedly against relegation before merging with TuS Schloß Neuhaus in 1985.

The SV 07 from the district of Paderborn Schloss Neuhaus was founded 1907th In 1944/45 he was represented in the Gauliga, which, however, ceased playing due to the war after the first game (0: 5 against Spfr. Rot-Weiß Paderborn). Until 1973, SV 07 played below the amateur league, in which TuS, founded in 1910 from the Sennelager north of Paderborn and incorporated four years earlier, first rose in 1971. In 1973 the soccer department of TuS Sennelager merged with SV 07 Neuhaus to form TuS Schloß Neuhaus , which, like TuS Sennelager, ranked in the lower table regions, decreased in 1976 and rose again in 1977. After a second, a fifth and a third place in the Oberliga Westfalen formed in 1978 , the TuS rose to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1982 as Westphalia champion, and in 1983 as bottom of the table again. After two fifth places, TuS merged with 1. FC Paderborn to form TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus.

The merging of forces from 1985 onwards only brought (re) promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga 20 years later. Before that, the TuS played in the amateur Oberliga Westfalen until the league was dissolved in 1994, mostly in the upper half of the table. The desired championship was not achieved until 1994, in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga, the Paderborn failed to Eintracht Braunschweig and Fortuna Düsseldorf , but qualified for the newly founded Regionalliga West / Südwest . Due to the season reduction of the Regionalliga for the 2000/01 season, the club, renamed SC Paderborn 07 in 1997, rose to the league, which he left as champions after a year. In 2005 the Paderborn finally rose to the 2nd Bundesliga.

Shortly before promotion, the Paderborn team got into the Hoyzer affair : The DFB Cup game against Hamburger SV (4: 2 after 0: 2 deficit) was manipulated by referee Robert Hoyzer (with two penalties (1: 2 and 4 : 2) for Paderborn and a red card for insulting the referee for Hamburg's Emile Mpenza ). Since the competition was too far advanced by the time Hoyzers was transferred, the result was not canceled.

In the 2nd Bundesliga, SC Paderborn was able to hold its own in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons without any problems, but in the 2007/08 season it was unable to match the performance of the previous seasons due to the financial burdens caused by the construction stop on the new stadium . The club occupied 17th place in the table and thus rose to the newly formed 3rd division for the 2008/09 season .

The first half of the 3rd division ended with SC Paderborn with 41 points and 38:21 goals as autumn champions before 1. FC Union Berlin and Kickers Emden . By the end of the season, however, he fell back to third place with 68 points and 68:38 goals and took part in the two relegation games to the 2nd Bundesliga . Opponent was the sixteenth of the table in the 2nd league, VfL Osnabrück , against whom Paderborn won 1-0 in both games. With this, the SCP rose again to the 2nd Bundesliga after just one year.

After a good season in 2009/10 , which the SCP finished in 5th place with 51 points, they only reached 12th place in 2010/11 ; Relegation was never in danger. With 61 points and rank 5, the 2011/12 season was the most successful season in the over 100-year history of the club, and for a long time promotion to the 1st Bundesliga seemed possible. The 2012/13 season ended the SC Paderborn with 42 points again on the 12th place in the table, although relegation was never in danger this time.

Rise, fall and rise again and direct descent again

With 62 points and a second place in the table in the 2013/14 second division season , SC Paderborn finally made it to the Bundesliga for the first time in the 2014/15 season . After the fourth match day, the club was leader. Relegation would have been possible until the last match day, but after a 1: 2 against VfB Stuttgart, SC Paderborn ended the season in 18th place and relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. At the end of the season of the 2nd Bundesliga 2015/16, Paderborn rose again from bottom of the table in the 3rd division. In the third division season 2016/17 the free fall of SC Paderborn continued. In the end, the table was in 18th place and thus the third sporting descent in a row. Because TSV 1860 Munich did not receive a license, the club stayed in the third division. After the 2017/18 season, SC Paderborn rose again to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 2018/19 season, the SCP succeeded in returning to the 1st Bundesliga. In the 2019/20 season, SC Paderborn was beaten in 18th and last place and only 20 points from 34 games in the Bundesliga and was not ripe enough, and relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga followed immediately.

Trainers and officials

From April 1997 to April 2009 , the president of SC Paderborn 07 was Wilfried Finke , who as an entrepreneur had already been a shirt sponsor for many years and now also supported the club as the main sponsor. The previous Vice-President (since 2008) Peter Evers was appointed as Finke's successor, but after a six-week term of office, Finke was reinstated as President by resolution of the Supervisory Board. Until his resignation in December 2009, Evers served as Vice President again. The current vice-presidents since 2016 are Josef Ellebracht and Rudolf Christa, and Martin Hornberger is the general manager . The jersey sponsor was the furniture store Finke until the end of the 2005/06 season, then the Warsteiner Brewery . For the 2008/09 season, the Finke group of companies again took over jersey advertising. For the 2013/14 season, kfzteile24 became the club's new jersey sponsor after Wilfried Finke announced that he would be leaving as a jersey sponsor. He focused more on the youth sector with his sponsorship. MEDIACOM took on the role of jersey sponsor in the 2016/17 season, and the Finke Group has been jersey sponsor again since the beginning of the 2017/18 season.

After Jos Luhukay's surprising resignation two days before the start of the 2006/07 season, assistant coach Markus Gellhaus took over the coaching position for a short time . Luhukay had taken over from Pavel Dotchev in the summer of 2005 and was surprisingly ninth in the second division with the club. Luhukay justified his resignation with a disturbed relationship with the board. The sports director Günther Rybarczyk also made his position available with immediate effect. After Roland Seitz took over the position of head coach on September 5, 2006 , Gellhaus also announced his departure from Paderborn. During the winter break, Seitz was released after a series of eight games without a win.

On January 3, 2007, Holger Fach took over the coaching position. A year later, on February 8, 2008, Fach was given leave of absence due to continued unsuccessfulness. Paderborn was at the time in the last place in the table in the 2nd Bundesliga, nine points behind the first non-relegation place. In addition to Fach, the association also parted with managing director Michael Born. As the successor to Holger Fach, Pavel Dotschew was hired as head coach, who had already trained the club from 2003 to 2005 and led it into paid football. Christian Schreier , who was released in April 2009, was hired as manager . André Schubert became the new sporting director . After Dotchev was also on leave, Schubert temporarily took over his office on May 13, 2009. On June 4, 2009 it was decided that Schubert would retain the dual role.

The contract with coach André Schubert, which ran until June 30, 2012, was terminated at the end of the 2010/11 season. Roger Schmidt was signed as a coach from the 2011/12 season. This last worked for Preußen Münster . Michael Born, who had already worked in various functions for SC Paderborn from 1996 to 2008, was appointed the new sporting director. After Roger Schmidt switched to FC Red Bull Salzburg , SC signed Stephan Schmidt , who had previously coached VfL Wolfsburg 's U-19s, as the new head coach for two years . Two game days before the end of the season, the club separated on May 5, 2013 after a negative series from him. Former SCP player René Müller took over the team as interim coach . André Breitenreiter , who had previously worked as a trainer at TSV Havelse , became the new coach . Breitenreiter rose with the team in the 2013/14 season in the Bundesliga.

After the announcement of André Breitenreiter's move to FC Schalke 04 for the 2015/16 season, Markus Gellhaus was introduced as coach for the new season on June 13, 2015 . He was released at the beginning of October. On October 13, 2015, Stefan Effenberg became the new head coach; he received a contract until the end of the 2017 season. On March 3, 2016 and standing on a direct relegation place, the cooperation was ended again. Immediately thereafter, René Müller took over again, who had already acted as interim trainer for a week before Effenberg was signed. On November 21, 2016, Florian Fulland became interim coach after a 6-0 defeat of SCP in Lotte, before Stefan Emmerling was signed as the new head coach on December 6, 2016. Stefan Emmerling was released on April 16, 2017. His successor is Steffen Baumgart. On the last day of the match, the SCP did not get past a 0-0 win at VfL Osnabrück, which meant that the relegation to the Regionalliga West was sealed. Due to a license refusal for TSV 1860 Munich for the third division season 2017/18, SC Paderborn remained in the third division. After the 2017/18 season, the club rose again to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the second division season 2018/19, the club made it through to the Bundesliga.

Fans

Floodlit atmosphere

The SCP has been able to gain an increasing number of fans in recent years. In the 2001/02 season, around 1,500 fans watched the games on average; in the 2011/12 season there were already over 10,000. In the 2014/15 Bundesliga season, the home contingent was completely sold out in all 17 games. In the 2018/19 season there was an average attendance of 11,508 in the Benteler Arena .

There are currently around 41 official fan clubs, which are mainly organized in the Paderborn region . The most distant club can be found in Darwin , Australia . The oldest official fan club is the "fan club without a name". The “Kids Club” and the integrative “Hand in Hand” fan club, which specifically enables people with disabilities to participate in the games, enjoy special attention. There are three ultra groups, each with a youth group. The first and largest group is “Supporters Paderborn”, which was founded in 2004. The supporters' youth group is called "Striving Youth". The next group is called “Passione” this was founded in 2009 and their youth group is called “Ambiente”. The third largest group is called "Black and Blue Fighters". This group was founded in 2006. Your youth group is called Ratio.

Fan Advisory Board

The fan advisory board was originally founded on the initiative of the fan clubs instead of an umbrella organization. Every two years this is re-elected by the fan clubs. Here the fans and their interests are to be represented. For this purpose, you meet regularly with the fan representatives appointed by the association or discuss in direct contact with the management. The advisory board is also involved in questions of security in football (local round table) and similar matters. The most important function of the fan council is the contact to the fans and spectators, whose concerns and suggestions are presented to the club. The fan advisory board also supports the fan representatives z. B. when driving away.

Fan rivalries

Rivalries exist mainly with the neighboring clubs Arminia Bielefeld (see Ostwestfalenderby ), Rot Weiss Ahlen , SV Lippstadt 08 and VfL Osnabrück .

There is also a great rivalry with the Sportfreunde Siegen - not least because of the circumstances of the former league relegation - and long-term competitors such as Preußen Münster or Eintracht Braunschweig . Games against Gütersloh in the 80s were very explosive , and in the 90s against Verl .

Stadiums and sports facilities

Paderkampfbahn

The Paderkampfbahn was the stadium of the previous club 1. FC Paderborn in the Oberliga Westfalen until 1985 . From then until the completion of the SCP Training Center (TNLZ) at the Ahorn Sports Park, it served as a training area. Due to the immediate proximity of the Paderkampfbahn to the Maspernplatz sports center with cabins, weight room, sports hall, swimming pool and a large car park, many synergies were used here.

In recent years, the cinder track and the only grandstand have been dismantled in favor of larger lawns.

Hermann Löns Stadium

The venue until the end of the 2007/08 season was the Hermann Löns Stadium (official capacity: 12,000 spectators) in the Neuhaus Castle district . The stadium is named after the writer Hermann Löns .

The stadium has been rebuilt and expanded several times. The main grandstand turned a sports field into a stadium. For the second division season 1982/83 the standing room was expanded, a mobile player tunnel and fences as well as block separations were installed. Later, the curve behind the northern gate was gradually removed in favor of a forecourt, a unique players' bridge was installed, new ticket offices were erected, breakwaters were built in, an additional tubular steel stand was built and floodlight masts were built.

The hallmark of the stadium, however, were the high-voltage lines running directly above it.

After the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2005, the DFB issued a permit for provisional continued use only on the condition that it would move to a second-division stadium in the near future.

Benteler Arena

After a feasibility study on cost-benefit calculations, it was decided against alternative locations such as the renovation of the sports facilities at the University of Paderborn , the Ahorn Sports Park , the Inselbad Stadium or the previously used Hermann Löns Stadium for a new building in the immediate vicinity of the A33 and B1.

At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, the SCP moved to the paragon arena (15,000 covered seats), which had been created on the Alme-Aue. The cost of the completely covered stadium was estimated at 12.5 million euros. After complaints from residents and a corresponding court ruling by the OVG Münster, the building permit was initially withdrawn in the second instance due to a lack of parking spaces and poor transport connections.

On May 1, 2006, the negotiations between the city of Paderborn and the three plaintiffs were broken off by the city due to a council decision. All concessions made between November 2005 and April 2006 between the city and the plaintiffs no longer applied. The city of Paderborn now intended to continue construction according to a "master plan" against which legal action should no longer stand a chance. Three parking garages, a multifunctional hall and a new exit directly from the B1 are planned. The new costs after the construction freeze should be around 25 million euros.

After a two-year standstill, the city of Paderborn issued the new building permit on November 23, 2007 and construction work resumed immediately. The venue, initially called paragon arena , was completed in July 2008; In the official opening game on July 20, 2008, SC Paderborn 07 lost 2-1 to Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund in front of 15,000 spectators after a 1-1 draw against Galatasaray Istanbul four days earlier . The first competitive game in the arena was played on August 2nd against SpVgg Unterhaching (1: 1) in front of 7,806 spectators.

The paragon arena was sold out for the first time in a competitive game on May 29, 2009 in the first leg for the second division delegation against VfL Osnabrück (1-0).

For the 2009/10 season the stadium was renamed the Energieteam Arena . According to Paderborn, the contract with the new namesake originally had a term until June 30, 2019. For economic reasons, however, the contract was terminated in 2011 at the end of the 2011/12 season. Since then, SC Paderborn has been looking for a new name sponsor for the stadium. The stadium has been known as the Benteler Arena since the 2012/13 season .

Various structural changes have already been made in the Benteler Arena in the past. The blocks on the north stand were rebuilt several times, so that today the away block has been reduced to just over the required minimum size. With blocks D1 and D2 you have blocks that you can give to the visiting club if necessary. In addition, the VIP and press area was expanded in the course of the first division promotion in 2014. In addition, additional entrances were built and modernized (electronic entry control). Finally, the floodlights were expanded, artificial turf was laid outside the pitch, advertising boards were optimized (e.g. rolling TV boards) and business premises were added.

The owner of the Benteler-Arena is the Paderborner Stadiongesellschaft (PSG) consisting of major sponsors such as Finke, Bremer and Warsteiner .

TNLZ 2016

After years of testing various locations such as the Paderkampfbahn or the square north of the Benteler Arena , an agreement was reached with the city of Paderborn on the Almepark Nord location.

A functional building and six training areas were planned - four of them for the junior teams. For cost reasons, the City Council of Paderborn decided in March 2015 to build four training grounds - one of which is artificial turf - and the functional building.

The PSG had to bear the costs for the functional building and other infrastructure measures such as parking spaces. The city of Paderborn took over the construction of the training grounds, whereby SC Paderborn 07 has to pay a lease of 130,000 euros per year for the spaces of the professionals over 20 years and thus refinances the construction. The training grounds will remain in the possession of the city of Paderborn for over 20 years, which will then continue to receive a newly negotiated lease.

To this end, SC Paderborn 07 undertook to vacate the spaces previously used and to allow other clubs to use the youth training center as well as to take care of maintenance and running costs.

More teams

SC Paderborn 07 maintains a youth performance center, in which around 180 young players from U11 to U21 are being trained as of the 2018/19 season. While the U16, the U17 and the U19 operate in the performance area, the U21 forms the interface between the youth and professional areas. The latter has been playing in the fifth-class Oberliga Westfalen since being promoted to the 2015/16 season and is the club's official second team.

In 1983 the male team of TuS Schloß Neuhaus rose to the 2nd Bundesliga West and two years later became runner-up behind Post SV Mülheim . After the merger to form TuS Paderborn-Neuhaus, further runners-up championships followed in 1986 and 1987 behind the TTC Grünweiß Bad Hamm and again the Post SV Mülheim. A year later, the Paderborn team missed the qualification for the now two-pronged 2nd Bundesliga. In the meantime slipped into the district league, the team reached the association league in 1994, before the department joined the TSV 1887 Schloss Neuhaus in June 1997 .
