Klaus Gjasula (born December 14, 1989 in Tirana ) is an Albanian - German soccer player who has been under contract with Hamburger SV since July 2020 .

Beginnings in Baden-Württemberg

Shortly after his birth, Gjasula moved with his parents from Albania to Freiburg im Breisgau . In his youth he played for PSV Freiburg , Offenburger FV and Freiburg FC . There he gained his first experience in the men's field, from the former second division he moved first to Bahlinger SC and a year later to league competitor SV Waldhof Mannheim . In his first season in Mannheim, he made it to the Regionalliga Süd .

Via Duisburg to Offenbach

For the 2012/13 season, the native Albanian moved to the second team of MSV Duisburg . After a year with the Zebras, the midfielder moved to Kickers Offenbach . In October 2013 Gjasula broke her cheekbone and had to wear a hard hat for safety. After the injury, he suffered another blow to the head in the first match without a helmet, and has been wearing this helmet ever since, as he says he feels safer with it. Gjasula does not want to enforce a helmet requirement, but thinks that it could make sense for injury-prone players to wear such a helmet during the games. With Offenbach he was champion of the Regionalliga Südwest in the 2014/15 season , but failed in the promotion games to the 3rd division at 1. FC Magdeburg .

Change to the 3rd division

At the beginning of January 2016, Gjasula moved to the third division for the Stuttgarter Kickers . Under head coach Tomislav Stipić , he played in 16 third division games (all from the beginning) by the end of the 2015/16 season , but was relegated to the Southwest Regionalliga with the club .

However Gjasula remained in the third league and joined the season 2016/17 to Halle FC . Under Rico Schmitt , the defensive midfielder established himself as a regular player and was used in 30 league games (all from the start), in which he scored 3 goals. With 15 yellow cards and one yellow-red card he missed 4 games suspended (3 due to yellow card suspension ). At the end of April, Gjasula suffered a metatarsal fracture on Matchday 35 , which ended the season for him. After recovering from his injury, he made his first season appearance on matchday 11 of the 2017/18 season at the end of September. Gjasula belonged directly back to the regular staff and completed 23 league games (22 times from the start), in which he scored 3 goals. With 12 yellow cards, he had to serve 2 yellow card suspensions.

SC Paderborn 07

For the 2018/19 season Gjasula moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for SC Paderborn 07 . He signed a contract with the promoted team until June 30, 2020. Unlike in his previous positions, Gjasula was not in defensive midfield for the entire season. Head coach Steffen Baumgart sometimes only played with a "six", in which case Sebastian Vasiliadis was preferred. Gjasula was used in 24 second division games (15 times from the start) and scored one goal. This season he fell through an aggressive style of play and had to go through 12 yellow cards two yellow-card suspensions to settle. With SC Paderborn, Gjasula made it into the Bundesliga in 2nd place .

In the 2019/20 season Gjasula was part of the permanent staff. He was used in 29 Bundesliga games (28 times from the start), in which he scored 2 goals. On matchday 30, Gjasula received his 16th yellow card, setting Tomasz Hajto's record from the 1998/99 season . The defensive midfielder received his 17th warning on matchday 31 and has been the sole record holder ever since. With 17 yellow cards, Gjasula missed 3 games due to yellow card suspension. With SC Paderborn he rose from bottom of the table back to the 2nd Bundesliga, whereupon he left the club when his contract ended.

Hamburger SV

For the 2020/21 season, Gjasula moved to Hamburger SV , with whom he signed a contract until June 30, 2022.

National team

At the age of 29, Gjasula made his debut for the Albanian national team in the European Championship qualifier against France on September 7, 2019 , when he was substituted on by coach Edoardo Reja for Ylber Ramadani in the 54th minute of the game .

family

His older brother Jürgen (* 1985) is also a soccer player. The family itself still lives in Freiburg.

The brothers were given the first names Jürgen and Klaus , which are unusual for Albanian standards, because their grandmother liked to watch The Black Forest Clinic , where Klausjürgen Wussow acted as Professor Brinkmann .
