Xavier Casmier Amaechi [ ˈzavie aˈmɪt͡ʃɨ ] (born January 5, 2001 in Bath ) is an English football player who has been under contract with Hamburger SV since the end of July 2019 .

Career

In the club

Amaechi was born the son of an Englishwoman and a Nigerian in Bath, England. The family later moved to Bushey , near London . Amaechi first played in the youth of London club Fulham before moving to the academy of city rivals Arsenal in 2013 at the age of 12 . At Arsenal FC, the winger went through all junior teams up to the U18. Already in the 2017/18 season Amaechi came to 8 appearances (6 times from the start) in the U23 in addition to appearances in the U18, with which he won the championship in the Premier League 2 . At the beginning of January 2018 he signed his first professional contract under Arsène Wenger . In the 2018/19 season he was only used sporadically in the U18 and mainly played in the U23, for which he scored 4 goals in 14 appearances (13 times from the start). In addition, Amaechi was traveling under the head coach Unai Emery with the first team for the final of the Europa League after Baku , was in the defeat to Chelsea but not in the 23-man squad.

At the end of July 2019, Amaechi moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for Hamburger SV , where he signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2023. He made his debut under head coach Dieter Hecking in the first round of the DFB Cup when he came on as a substitute for the win against third division Chemnitzer FC and became the first HSV player to be born in the 21st century . As a result, Amaechi sat on the bench in some second division games without being substituted on. In the mostly played 4-3-3 system , Bakery Jatta , Sonny Kittel , Martin Harnik , Jairo or Khaled Narey were preferred to him on the wing . He made his first league appearance on matchday 7, when he came on as a substitute in the 4-0 win against FC Erzgebirge Aue in the closing stages. After further games as an unused substitute, Amaechi, who could also have played in the A-youth (U19), played twice in the second team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord in October, scoring 3 goals. Amaechi also sat on the bench in the subsequent second division games, but was not substituted on. On the last day of the winter transfer period, a short-term loan to the English second division club Huddersfield Town failed because their goalkeeper Kamil Grabara had injured his head, whereupon the club signed Jonas Lössl as a replacement and waived Amaechi for financial reasons. Until the season break, which had become necessary after the 25th matchday due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Amaechi was only once in the matchday squad without being substituted on. After the game was resumed after a two-month break with ghost games , he came on the 30th matchday for another short assignment, but otherwise played no role.

In the national team

Amaechi first played in the England U16 national team. From February to May 2018 he played seven times (two goals) in the U17 team . With the U17s, Amaechi took part in the 2017 U17 European Championship in Croatia , where he scored a goal in four games. He has been active for the English U19s since 2019 .
