Beginnings in the Netherlands

Rick van Drongelen played for VV Axel and Jeugd Voetbal Opleiding Zeeland until 2012 . At the age of twelve he did a trial training at FC Twente Enschede , but at the age of 13 he decided to switch to Sparta Rotterdam because he still wanted to live with his parents and played in various youth teams and later in the second team. He started out with several players from the Terneuzen area and took a minibus to Rotterdam before moving to The Hague at the age of 17 . In total, he completed 46 games in the Eredivisie for Sparta.

Hamburger SV

For the 2017/18 season , van Drongelen moved to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV at the age of 18 . He received a contract that ran until June 30, 2022. Under head coach Markus Gisdol , he played as a left-back in the first 3 league games, while Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Gideon Jung and Mergim Mavraj formed the central defense. In his third assignment, the Dutchman had to be replaced due to an injury and was subsequently out due to bone edema in his pelvis. During his absence, Douglas Santos earned the regular place on the left-back position. After van Drongelen returned to the matchday squad on the 8th matchday without being used, he shuttled between the bench and starting eleven in the central defense up to and including the 19th matchday, which he formed in a chain of 3 and 5 with Papadopoulos and Mavraj. From the 20th match day he was in central defense under the new coach Bernd Hollerbach and played all 7 games during his term of office over the full season. After Christian Titz, the third head coach, took over the team, van Drongelen was placed in a back four alongside Papadopoulos or Jung in his first four games. In the last 4 league games he was no longer used, since from then on Papadopoulos and Jung formed the central defense. Van Drongelen made 18 Bundesliga appearances in his first HSV season, starting 16 times. HSV was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time at the end of the season .

In the 2018/19 season , van Drongelen played all 34 games in the starting line-up under Titz and his successor Hannes Wolf and scored 2 goals. He was only substituted once at half-time. At his side mostly the newcomer David Bates played , but also Gideon Jung and Léo Lacroix . The HSV missed the direct rise in 4th place.

Before the 2019/20 season , 20-year-old van Drongelen became vice-captain behind Aaron Hunt . At the beginning of the season, the Dutchman under Dieter Hecking , who always played a back four, was in central defense alongside Gideon Jung and was in the starting XI in the first 16 games. From the 16th match day, his compatriot Timo Letschert established himself as a constant in HSV central defense. Van Drongelen mostly played at his side, but was occasionally pushed to the bench by Ewerton or Jordan Beyer . He was noticed again and again during this season due to individual mistakes. After the top game they lost against VfB Stuttgart on matchday 28 , the kicker wrote : “It is also clear that Rick van Drongelen's severe dropouts, which have been recurring for months, can no longer be explained by a form low, but rather cause fundamental doubts. “In total, van Drongelen made 32 league appearances for HSV, which again missed promotion in 4th place (29 times from the start). On the last day of the match he tore a cruciate ligament .

National team

He has played for the Dutch U17 national team , for the U18 and for the Dutch U19 selection since 2015 . On September 1, 2017, van Drongelen made his debut for the Dutch U21 national team in a 1-1 draw in the European Championship qualifier against England in Doetinchem .
