Terneuzen ( ) ( Zeeland Terneuzen or Neuzen ) is a municipality in the south-west of the Netherlands . According to the CBS, it had 54,666 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 , making it the largest in the province of Zeeland . After Rotterdam and Amsterdam, it has the third largest port in the Netherlands.

Location and economy
Terneuzen is located on the Scheldt in Zeeuws Vlaanderen , the Dutch part of Flanders, which belongs to the province of Zeeland . In the south, the municipality borders on Belgian East Flanders . The 43 km long channel Zeekanal Ghent-Terneuzen connects Terneuzen with Gent in Belgium .
The trade and handling sectors offer many jobs. Chemical companies and a paper and cardboard factory are located along the canal . Sas van Gent (= Ghent lock) is on the Belgian border on the canal, halfway to Ghent.
A lot of flax is grown in Koewacht . Philippine is a center of mussel culture with many restaurants . In Zuiddorpe is asparagus grown. Tourism is another important economic factor in Terneuzen.
Terneuzen is connected to the Netherlands by road via the Westerschelden tunnel. The tunnel is toll road, it was opened in March 2003. There is only a connection by rail to Belgium, which has only been used for freight traffic since 1951.
history
Terneuzen was built on a headland (nes, nose); but the headland also resembled a nose (Dutch: neus) and was fortified in 1491. Like the town of Sas van Gent, which was made a border fortress in 1644, it was fiercely fought over during the Eighty Years' War , as this Protestant area loyal to Holland separated Catholic Flanders from the sea.
Terneuzen prides itself on being the birthplace of the Flying Dutchman .
Several places suffered from storm surges, including Zaamslag, which was completely destroyed in 1650 and then had to be rebuilt from scratch. The last of these disasters took place on February 1, 1953. The Gent – Terneuzen Canal was opened in 1827 when the Netherlands and Belgium temporarily formed a common kingdom.
Biervliet is proud of Willem Beukelszoon, who invented "kaaken" in the 14th century, the gutting of herring so that the fish does not spoil so quickly (see also Matjes ). His statue stands in the middle of the place.

Landmarks and sights
- The historic town of Axel has a local museum and two other very small museums, some old houses and a little forest in the area.
- Biervliet is more picturesque, but much smaller than Axel .
- Hoek is a simple village, but has by far the best football club in the region (the only professional club nearby is AA Gent in Belgium).
- In Philippine you can eat mussels in the season (around July 15 to February of the next year).
- Westdorpe boasts the Canisvlietse Kreek nature reserve
- Zuiddorpe consists of some beautiful linden avenues.
