Location of Sluiskil in the municipality of Terneuzen |
Sluiskil is a village in the Dutch municipality of Terneuzen , located on the Gent-Terneuzen Canal . The village has 2,350 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
history
The core of the village was removed for the major expansion of the Gent-Terneuzen Canal in the early 1960s. In addition, 200 houses, shops, a church and a school were demolished.
Sluiskil owns a port and fertilizer industry . The first coking plant (ACZC) in the Netherlands, founded in 1911, closed on January 1, 2000; the last working day was July 31, 1999.
Fertilizer production
In 1929 Sluiskil started making fertilizers. The factory is just across the canal east of Sluiskil. In 1979 the Nederlandse Stikstof Maatschappij (NSM; German: Dutch nitrogen company) was taken over by Norsk Hydro . After the fertilizer business was spun off in 2004, it became part of Yara International . On the premises there are, among other things, three ammonia - two nitric acid - and two urea plants, as well as two nitrate granulation units. About 70% of ammonia production is processed into fertilizer end products; the rest is used by other Yaras companies or sold to third parties. The plant in Sluiskil is one of the largest yaras in Europe, with production exceeding 3.5 million tons per year. The company is located directly on the Gent-Terneuzen Canal, with good connections to the North Sea and the European canal network. Ships weighing up to 50,000 tons can moor on the facility's quay.
Traffic and transportation
The national road 61 and the freight railroad Gent-Terneuzen cross, parallel, the Gent-Terneuzen Canal over a swing bridge . As the canal is heavily used, this bridge is often open. Since the opening of the Westerschelden Tunnel , traffic over this bridge has increased significantly. Therefore, in the coming years the Sluiskil tunnel will be constructed in such a way that it relieves the traffic volume for the swing bridge.
On April 1, 1869 , the train station was opened east of Sluiskil. This was closed on October 7, 1951. On the south side of Sluiskil was the Stopplaats Sluiskil Bridge .
Sports
The small place is a billiards stronghold . The billiards Dallinga / Frans Bevers plays in the three- cushion honor division and became champions of the Netherlands in 2013 and won the National Cup. The team also took part in the Coupe d'Europe . The first World Cup of the year was held in 2009, the men's three-cushion World Cup in 2010 and the Junior World Cup in September 2014 , also in three-cushion.
