history

After flooding in the 16th century, the polder area around the village of Borssele was re-diked and parceled out at right angles in the following century. The rectangular layout of the old village of Borssele was traced back to plans by the mathematician Simon Stevin from 1616, but according to more recent studies, Cornelis Soetwater is the responsible town planner. On October 26, 1944, troops of the Scottish 52nd Lowland Division landed on the Scheldeoord near Baarland to liberate South Beveland from the German occupation. Since March 2003, Borsele has had a permanent connection with the other bank of the Scheldt: the Westerschelden tunnel connects Ellewoutsdijk with Terneuzen .
