Baarland is a village in the municipality of Borsele in the Dutch province of Zeeland . It has 620 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

There are two castles in the village: In the middle of the center, behind the church, lies the former slot Baarland from the 14th century, which was destroyed during the Cosmas and Damian floods of 1477. Only the moat, the foundation walls and the coach house were spared. The foundation walls have been restored. An extensive castle garden was laid out on the castle grounds and can be visited.

Very close to the village, on the way to Oudelande, lie the foundations of the former medieval Hellenburg Castle of two brothers, Hendrick and Costijn from the Van Renesses family, who originally came from Renesse on Schouwen-Duiveland . They were probably closely related to Jan van Renesse , whose possessions in Zeeland went to Witte van Haamstede in 1304 after the Battle of Zieriksee and whose family members then fled to other places. Hellenburg Castle was built well into the 15th century, but nothing is known about its further history or its demise. It was not until 1958 that foundations were discovered and exposed as part of a land consolidation. In the following years, further exposures were made. The area around the ruins is freely accessible.

On October 26, 1944, troops of the Scottish 52nd Lowland Division crossed the Scheldt and landed on the Scheldeoord near Baarland, in order to liberate south beveland from the German occupation in the following days and to secure the shipping route to the Antwerp port.

The Protestant parish church of Baarland is the late Gothic church of Sint Maarten .
