First Cosmas and Damian flood

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first Cosmas and Damian flood on September 27, 1477 was a storm surge that affected the entire North Sea coast of the German Bight and the Dutch-Belgian coast. It is named after the church saints Cosmas and Damian , whose feast day is September 26th.

The storm surge destroyed some dikes in East Frisia . It is known from the Rheiderland that several localities had to be abandoned. With the destruction of the First Cosmas and Damian Floods, the development of the Dollart was promoted. The storm surge of 1477 is considered to be one of the worst to hit the Netherlands. The coast of Flanders was particularly hard hit. In Zeeland , the town of Arnemuiden was devastated and Hellenburg Castle near Baarland was badly damaged.
