The second Cosmas and Damian flood on 25./26. September 1509 was a storm surge that affected the entire North Sea coast of the German Bight . It is named after Cosmas and Damian , whose feast day is September 26th.

In East Frisia and the neighboring Netherlands , the flood caused devastating damage to the Rheiderland and neighboring Oldambt . The places Torum, Wilgum, Fletum, Westerreide and Osterreide and the Palmar Monastery had to be abandoned as a result of the natural disaster.

The later chancellor of the Jever rule , Remmer von Seediek, reported in his Chronicle of the Jeverland :

“In 1509, on the day of Cosmas and Damian, there was a great flood in all of the Netherlands. It spoiled many dikes in Östringen and in Wangerland and especially in Rüstringen . Large pools collapsed there and the dikes broke miserably, so that Junker Edo had enough to do with the country and its people for two years before the dikes were restored. "

- Remmer from Seediek

The Dollard reached its greatest extent and the Jade Bight also expanded greatly. In Emden the broke Ems a flux loop and thereby creating a new river bed. As a result, Emden was no longer a direct seaport, the port became muddy and economic decline began.
