Location of Hoedekenskerke in the municipality of Borsele |
Hoedekenskerke ( Zeeland Oetjeskerreke ) is a village in the municipality of Borsele in the Dutch province of Zeeland with around 715 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on the banks of the Westerschelde .
The former grain mill Koutermolen from 1874, in which grain was ground professionally until 1964, is located on Molenstraat . The jetty for the ferry to Terneuzen , which ceased operations in 1972, is still in the former ferry port . It is slowly silting up and is only used by small yachts and sport fishing boats. The late Gothic St. Joriskerk from the first half of the 15th century can be found on the Kerkstraat .
Hoedekenskerke has been connected to a railway line since the 1930s, the "ringlijn" (ring line) Goes - Borsele - Hoedekenskerke - Goes of the SZB, which is particularly popular during the holiday months.
Although the coat of arms of Hoedekenskerke shows three melons , the name of the village has nothing to do with hats (Dutch for hat: hoed), but rather comes from an army Odekijn , a gentleman who donated a church to the village at the beginning of the 15th century. It was torn down in the 19th century; only the choir was preserved, where there is also an interesting reference to contemporary history: the tombstone of Pastor Jan Lanaerts from Bakendorp , who died on April 28, 1518, is one of the few references to Bakendorp , which sank in a storm surge in 1530.
