World Ski Mountaineering Championships 2002
The 1st World Ski Mountaineering Championship 2002 ( French Championnats du Monde de Ski de Montagne 2002 ) was held from January 24th to 27th, 2002 in the Dauphiné near Serre Chevalier , France . The organizer was the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ICSM) of the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA) with the support of the Fédération française de la montagne et de l'escalade (FFME). A total of 230 athletes from 22 nations and three continents took part.
As early as 1975, the Trofeo Mezzalama was held as the "World Ski Mountaineering Championship", at that time in the classes "civilians", " soldiers " and " mountain guides ". At the ICSM World Championship, however, only participants from the national squad were rated. In countries that did not have a national (sub) organization for ski mountaineering in 2002, registration for participation was made through the national mountaineering organizations.
equipment
The equipment of the participating nations showed great differences. Canadian athlete Richard Haywood wrote in his report on the team race:
“The prerequisites were already in place with the scene at the start line, with all the techno light skis of the Europeans in contrast to a pair of“ fat ” skis and a pair of“ tele ”skis with which the Canada team presented itself. Our racing suits were made of Gore-Tex , not Lycra , and we didn't have any logos. Due to the courtesy of some other countries that were slower than us, we didn't come last. The best saying we heard came from the Polish team we passed at high speed on the descent, which said: "You guys can definitely ski fast" - which meant that we were very slow on the ascent! "
The approximately 170 cm long super light skis of the top European teams including bindings weighed only two kilograms. They also possessed addition to the aforementioned racing suits long and light Nordic skiing - ski poles .
procedure
At the 2008 World Cup, individual and team races were held, and the combined scoring of both disciplines was carried out for the individual participants. First of all, the holding of the first official World Cup had to be postponed by one day due to the heavy snowfall.
