Trofeo Mezzalama

The Trofeo Mezzalama ( German translation : “Mezzalama Trophy ) is an Italian racing competition in ski mountaineering near Cervinia . In 1975 the Trofeo Mezzalama was held as the so-called world championship in ski mountaineering , at that time in the classes “civilians”, “ soldiers ” and “ mountain guides ”.

The Trofeo Mezzalama is the highest alpine ski touring race in the world and, along with the Patrouille des Glaciers and the Pierra Menta, is one of the three most famous classic events in this sport ( les grandes trois de ski de montagne ). The competition in the Monte Rosa massif is named after the famous ski tourer Ottorino Mezzalama (1888–1931). The Mezzalama Skyrace is also held in the region .

Participation in the race takes place in teams of three.

route

Cervina (discharge point)

The tour conquers a total of 2,862 vertical meters in the ascent and 3,145 vertical meters in the descent. The approximately 45-kilometer route crosses the 4,000 m limit several times and starts in Cervina, leads over the Ventina ski slope to the Breithorn Pass to the first checkpoint at 3,826 meters, which the male participants can take as an intermediate goal in 2 hours  30 minutes ' and the women in 2 h  45 ' must be reached. From there it continues over the Zwillingsjoch ( Italian : Passo di Verra ) to the second control point at 3,848 m, then over the Castor summit to the third control point on the 3,719 m high Felik glacier , which in a given total time of the male participants in 5 h  30 ' and women in 5 h  45 ' . The next stage leads over the Passo del Naso (4,150 m) to the fourth control point on the Lyskamm , from where the descent to Gressoney-La-Trinité (1,637 m) takes place. The course record is 4h 18 '.
