The world championships in ski mountaineering ( English World Championships of Skimountaineering , French Championnats du Monde de Ski de Montagne ) are world championships in competitive ski mountaineering .

The official world championship was held for the first time by the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ICSM) in the United Nations for the " International Year of Mountains" 2002. It took place from January 24 to 27, 2002 in Serre Chevalier, France, and has been organized every two years with the support of the respective national organizations. In 2002, over 230 athletes from 22 nations and three continents took part. Previously, the Trofeo Mezzalama was held as the "World Ski Mountaineering Championship" in 1975 , at that time in the classes "civilians", " soldiers " and " mountain guides ". Other venues for the World Championships organized by the ICSM were the Val d'Aran in Spain in 2004 , in the Italian province of Cuneo in 2006 and in 2008 in Portes du Soleil in Switzerland . The fifth world championship took place in 2010 in the Gran Valira region , Andorra , and the VI. World Championship held in Claut , Italy . Originally, the 2012 World Cup should have taken place in Schladming , but was canceled due to lack of funding, brought forward one year and held in Claut.

The competitions in the individual disciplines take place almost daily during the implementation period. Some participants start at several events. Since the national squads usually have very good young athletes, ski climbers of the “Espoirs” (youngsters) age group regularly take part in the individual, relay and team runs of the “seniors”.

Ratings

The disciplines are rated separately according to gender and age group . At the 1st World Championship, there were initially only individual and team runs, and there was also a combination of individual and team. National teams of two take part in the team runs. In 2004 a relay race was added and the world championship in the vertical race . In 2004, the relay teams already consisted of four ski mountaineers for men and three female ski mountaineers for women. At the later World Championships, all senior relay teams consisted of four members. In 2006 no individual race could be held due to the snow conditions; as a result, there was no combined evaluation in the III. World Championship. At the fourth world championship, the so-called long distance was also scored for the first time, but this was removed from the program and replaced by the sprint. Not all participating nations have a sufficient number of athletes in the national team to be able to take part in all competitions.
