World Ski Mountaineering Championships 2011

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The VI. The world championship in ski mountaineering took place from February 20 to February 25, 2011 in Claut . Originally the World Championships should take place in March 2012. The International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ISMC) decided in 2008 to hold the event in Austria , in the region around Schladming , but the event actually took place in Claut, Italy, in 2011.

Claut had also applied to host the event. Decisive for the award for Schladming were the positive experience with the triple implementation of the Dachstein Xtreme by ASKIMO as well as the successes of the Austrian national team in ski mountaineering competitions on an international level. The decision of the ISMC to hold the event in Schladming under the leadership of the Austrian Association of Competitive Ski Mountaineers ASKIMO was made just a few days before the decision of the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) that on May 29, 2008, the Styrian town was to host the 2013 Alpine World Ski Championships selected.

The 2012 World Cup would have been held outside the Western Alps and Pyrenees for the first time . However, after intensive preparations by ASKIMO, the project failed due to political resistance to the recognition of ski mountaineering as an official sport in Austria. Due to unavailable funding and a lack of support, ASKIMO 2010 was forced to cancel Austria as a venue. In a fast-track process, the world championship could be handed over to competitor Claut, who had to bring the event forward by one year (to 2011). Thus the world championships will take place in the uneven years in the future, coordinated with the Olympic Winter Games, which will be held in the even years, in the hope that ski mountaineering can also take part in them in the future.
