World Ski Mountaineering Championship 2008
The 4th World Ski Mountaineering Championship 2008 was held from February 23 to 29, 2008 in Portes du Soleil , Switzerland . The organizer was the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ISMC) of the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA). For the first time, the so-called long distance was added as a discipline in the IV. Around 450 ski mountaineers from the national team from a total of 29 nations took part.
procedure
After the first briefings on the event, the opening ceremony and the presentation of the participating nations took place on February 23, 2008 in the Champery ice rink . On February 24th, the individual ski mountaineering race for women and men in the age groups “Seniors” and “Juniors” was held. The relay race in four seasons followed on February 25 and the team competition on February 26. After a day of rest for the runners, the vertical race was held on February 28 and the individual long distance race on the last day of the World Cup. On February 29th, following the award ceremony for the long distance, the closing ceremony with the invasion of the athletes took place.

Ski mountaineering individual races
The single race for took place on February 24, 2008 in Valerette . The start was in Les Cerniers / Monthey . The difference in altitude for ascent and descent was +/- 1650 m. With a corresponding result, participants in the “Espoirs” age group were included in the “Seniors” category.

Ski mountaineering relay
The relay race took place on February 25, 2008 with the award ceremony in Morgins . It was run in teams of four. The difference in altitude for the ascent was + 260 m for the single runners in the “senior” class. The relay team also included runners in the "Espoirs" age group.

The team race took place on February 26, 2008 in Pointe de l'Au for the "seniors". The difference in altitude for the ascent was + 1940 m and for the descent - 2125 m. Some of the teams also included ski mountaineers from the “Espoirs” age group.

Vertical race
The Vertical Race was held on February 28, 2008 for all age groups. The difference in altitude for the ascent was + 870 m for the individual runners in the “senior” class. Among the seniors, members of the “Espoirs” age group also took part.

Long distance ski mountaineering single
For the first time, the long distance individual discipline was held on the last day of the world championship as part of the ski mountaineering world championship. The difference in altitude for ascent and descent was +/- 3200 m for men, + 2500 m for women for ascent and - 2700 m for descent.
