The urban center of the Chablais is in Monthey, on the debris cone of the Vièze on the left bank of the Rhone and at the entrance to the Val d'Illiez. The Pas de Morgins to the Val d'Abondance is also known. As a regional cultural center, Monthey plays an important role. The city is home to two colleges of higher education, one for commerce and general education, the other for health and social work, and since 1984 the studio of Radio Chablais and since 1989 the Théâtre du Crochetan.
