West of Raron ( French Rarogne occidental ) is a semi- district in the canton of Valais in Switzerland . The main town is Raron .
The two semi-districts of Ostlich Raron and Westlich Raron have the same district number assigned by the Federal Statistical Office (BFS).
Raron was part of the Wallis region until 1798, but was dissolved in 1798 and distributed to the Helvetic districts of Goms, Brig, Visp and Leuk. 1802-10 Raron was a Zenden of the Republic of Valais, 1810-14 divided into the two cantons Raron and Mörel of the French department of Simplon. From 1815 to 18-48 Raron was again a Zenden.
From 1848 to 1987 Raron was a district of the canton of Valais, since 1987 Raron has been divided into the two independent semi-districts West and East Raron. This designation appears for the first time in the cantonal constitution of 1844. Both semi-districts are independent constituencies with a district council, prefect and deputy.
