Steg ( Valais German : Schtäg ) is a parish of the deanery Raron and a village in Upper Valais that belongs to the political municipality of Steg-Hohtenn in the Westlich Raron district of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.
geography
The village of Steg is located at the southern exit of the Lötschental valley in the German-speaking part of the canton. To the west it borders on the Lonza River , which also marks the district boundary, and on the municipality of Gampel . The place has around 1300 inhabitants (as of 2006) and is an important location for industry and commerce in Upper Valais.
history
Today's village of Steg was originally called Benken. The name 'Steg' comes from the bridge that connects the villages of Gampel and Steg. The name Benken disappeared around 1720 as a name for the community.
On December 16, 2007, the citizens of the communities of Steg and Hohtenn agreed to a community merger . The municipality merged to form Steg-Hohtenn on January 1, 2009.
