The ASKIMO ( A ustrian SKIM ountaineering O rganization for Competitions ) is the national Austrian Association for COMPETITION ski mountaineering .

The organization was founded on November 10, 2006 in Altenmarkt , recognized and accepted as a member in October 2007 by the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA) and its International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ISMC). Previously, Austrian ski mountaineers could only be linked to the ISMC and take part in international competitions through the Association of Austrian Alpine Clubs (VAVÖ). This responsibility was taken over by ASKIMO when the association was founded in 2006. In 2008, the ISMF (International Skimountaineering Federation) emerged from the ISMC on an international level. The ISMF (and thus also the ASKIMO as a member association of the ISMF) received recognition from the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2009 and also from the Sportaccord in 2010 . At the national level, the procedure for the BSO ( Austrian Federal Sports Organization ) has been running for the ASKIMO since October 2007 to accept the ASKIMO with the sport of "competitive ski mountaineering" as an independent association.

The association's headquarters are in Gosau in Upper Austria.

The ASKIMO committees as of the General Meeting of 11/2012 are listed below.

The first president of ASKIMO from 2006 to 2010 was Karl Posch, who founded and built up the association together with Vice President Konrad Meindl. The two had already launched the Austria Skitour Cup (ASTC) in 2002 and are the pioneers of organized competitive ski mountaineering in Austria.

In October 2010, in the course of the ordinary general assembly, there were new elections through which the board was reorganized. At this meeting, Karl Posch resigned from all of the posts laid down in the statutes and from that point on took over the role of managing director at ASKIMO. Konrad Meindl took over the office of president and with it the leadership of the association.

In February 2013 Oliver Schneider was co-opted as second Vice President alongside Werner Brugger.

Austrian Championship (ÖM) in ski mountaineering

In the winter of 2001/2002 the Austrian ski mountaineering championship was held for the first time , at that time still under the VAVÖ. For this purpose, the organizers of the ASTC had concluded an agreement with the VAVÖ, according to which all association matters were in the VAVÖ, but the operational activities and races could take place within the ASTC. The ÖM was originally set up as a cup classification within the ASTC for the two races "DachSteinBock" (Russbach / State of Salzburg) and "Auffi muas i" (Mauterndorf / State of Salzburg). This mode was retained as the number of races increased until 2004.

Since 2005, the ÖM has continued to be held within the ASTC, but as a single event:

  • 2005 " Hoachsunnlauf " (Steinach am Brenner / State of Tyrol)
  • 2006 and 2007 " Dachstein Xtreme " (Schladming / Federal State of Styria) (2007 for the first time under the ASKIMO)
  • 2008 " Rofan Xtreme " (Maurach am Achensee / State of Tyrol)

Up to and including 2008, only the individual competition in ski mountaineering was carried out and evaluated as an ÖM. Since 2009, an ÖM has been carried out in two disciplines (Individual and Vertical):

  • January 24th, 2009 ÖM vertical competition : " Champ Or Cramp " (Spittal an der Drau / Federal State of Carinthia)
  • February 1st, 2009 ÖM individual competition: " Knappen-Königs-Trophy " (Bischofshofen / State of Salzburg)
  • 23 January 2010 ÖM vertical competition: "Champ Or Cramp" (Spittal an der Drau / Federal State of Carinthia)
  • February 14, 2010 ÖM individual competition: Achensee Xtreme (Maurach am Achensee / Tyrol)
  • 22nd January 2011 ÖM vertical competition: "Champ Or Cramp" (Spittal an der Drau / federal state of Carinthia)
  • March 27, 2011 ÖM individual competition: Achensee Xtreme (Maurach am Achensee / Tyrol)
  • January 8, 2012 ÖM vertical competition: Jennerstier (Berchtesgaden / Germany)
  • March 18, 2012 ÖM individual competition: Achensee Xtreme (Maurach am Achensee / Tyrol)
  • January 19, 2013 ÖM vertical competition: "Champ Or Cramp" (Spittal an der Drau / Federal State of Carinthia)
  • April 6, 2013 ÖM individual competition: Hohe Tauern Trophy (Matrei in Osttirol / Tirol), after the originally planned event at the Laserzlauf in Lienz had to be canceled due to bad weather.

All results can be found on the official ASKIMO association website.

National team

Austria was the last Alpine country that did not have a national ski mountaineering team. From 2002 onwards, assignments to international competitions were only sporadic and specific.

Since the 2007/2008 season, ASKIMO has been running an Austrian national team in competitive ski mountaineering and sending a national team to international competitions.
