The Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) is the central umbrella organization of sports federations worldwide. A total of 109 organizations belong to it (as of October 2017), including sports associations such as the FIS or FIFA , but also sports organizations with special tasks such as the World Federation of Sports Medicine . However, the International Olympic Committee is not a member. The association is also known under the old name SportAccord .

The highest decision-making body is the General Assembly , which takes place annually in May at different locations. The individual member associations are entitled to vote regardless of their size.
The board of directors, whose term of office is four years, consists of nine people. These are selected according to a certain key:
- three from the associations belonging to the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF)
- two from the associations belonging to the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF)
- two from the associations belonging to the Association of the IOC Recognized International Sports Federations (ARISF)
- one of the associations belonging to the Alliance of Independent Recognized Members of Sport (AIMS) and
- one from the ranks of the associations that do not belong to any of the organizations mentioned
The President is elected by the General Assembly. From 2016 until his death on October 14, 2018, the incumbent was the Swiss Patrick Baumann , at the time of his election General Secretary of the World Basketball Federation FIBA . Raffaele Chiulli was appointed as acting head for the period up to the General Assembly in May 2019.

history
The association was founded in Lausanne in 1967 as the General Assembly of International Sports Federations and renamed the General Association of International Sports Federations in 1976 . From April 2009 the association was called SportAccord, and since April 2017 it has had its current name. The founding and current seat is Lausanne; however, from 1978 to 2009 it was Monaco .
On April 20, 2015, then-President Marius Vizer gave a controversial speech at the SportAccord Congress in Sochi in which he attacked the IOC and proposed a 20-point plan. The plan was not discussed with the member associations, so that as a result more than two dozen SportAccord members suspended or canceled their membership. Vizer subsequently missed the support of the association members and resigned from the presidency at the end of May 2015. SportAccord found itself in a crisis and had to reduce the workforce by two thirds from 21 to 7 employees in the second half of 2015. At 1.7 million euros, the 2016 budget is around a quarter of the 2014 amount after the association lost numerous sponsors. President Patrick Baumann, elected in April 2016, was considered a confidante of IOC President Thomas Bach . The professional associations for rowing and shooting sports, which resigned in 2015, have been members again since April 2017.

While the International Olympic Committee only recognizes 68 professional associations (as of October 2012), the group of member associations of the GAISF is considerably larger and also includes numerous sports that are hardly known in Europe. Since the start of the racing association FIA in May 2013 include all major sports federations SportAccord that - is therefore considered the highest body of world sport - despite limited resources and skills.
The condition for admission is the worldwide distribution of a sport. As a rule - even with competing international sports associations - only one association per sport is accepted. Their admission is decided by an absolute majority .

Competitions
The GAISF organizes several international multisport events such as the World Combat Games , the World Mind Games , the World Artistic Games and the World Beach Games as competitions of the worldwide sports elite of many non-Olympic and Olympic sports.
