World Baseball Softball Confederation
The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) is a merger of the International Baseball Federation and the International Softball Federation and now represents both sports, baseball and softball, as a world association . After the merger was announced on December 19, 2012, a campaign was launched on April 14, 2013 to be included in the 2020 Olympic program. Baseball (for men) was Olympic from 1992 to 2008, softball (for women) from 1996 to 2008. The merger was completed in 2014 at a union congress of the two associations.
At its meeting in May 2013 in St. Petersburg, the Executive Committee of the IOC selected baseball / softball as one of the other possible sports for the 2020 program, alongside squash and wrestling . On September 8, 2013, the IOC General Assembly decided to keep the sport of wrestling in the Olympic program for 2020 and 2024. As a result, baseball / softball did not remain Olympic.
On August 3, 2016, at its 129th session, the IOC General Assembly decided to include base and softball and four other sports in the program for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo . The basis for this was the IOC's Agenda 2020 adopted in December 2014, according to which the host has the opportunity to name additional sports that are to be played at the Olympic Games.
