United World Wrestling (UWW) is the international amateur wrestling association. Until September 2014 it was known as the Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées (FILA) .

A forerunner was the officially German-speaking International Ring Association founded in Stockholm in 1912 . President was the Hungarian Dr. Péter Tatits. In 1921, 19 national ring federations formed the International Amateur Wrestling Federation with English as the official language (IAWF). The Swede Einar Raberg, who was in office until 1924, was elected president.

In 1946 the headquarters of the IAWF were relocated to Paris . In 1965 it was the first sports association to move to Lausanne , Switzerland. In 1952 Roger Coulon became general secretary of the association, which was now called the International Federation of Amateur Wrestling . He gave himself new rules and organized the first referee courses in 1957. After Coulon's death in 1971, Milan Ercegan succeeded him for 30 years.

In 1994 the association was renamed the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles and took up other types of wrestling. New competitions were introduced, including the Junior World Championship. Women's wrestling was accepted as an equal discipline in the FILA and its affiliated national federations. In 2002 the Swiss Raphaël Martinetti became President of FILA. Three days after the International Olympic Committee announced that it would remove wrestling from the list of Olympic sports, Martinetti was removed from office and the Serbian Nenad Lalović was elected as his successor on February 16, 2013. This succeeded on September 8, 2013 at the 125th General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee in Buenos Aires to prevent the exclusion. When FILA was renamed UWW in September 2014, Lalović was elected for a further six-year presidential mandate.

United World Wrestling now organizes up to 150 tournaments and competitions annually. This also includes the European and Senior World Championships. In addition, the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame is subordinate to the association , in which the best wrestlers, referees and supporters of the wrestling are recognized. In addition to the established fighting styles Greco and Freestyle , the martial arts grappling as well as beach wrestling and traditional wrestling are organized in the UWW world association.

United World Wrestling has 185 associations from 184 countries, including the German Wrestling Association . (As of July 2019).
