Grappling (handle methods handle the fight) is an element of many martial arts and includes levers , throws , bring to the ground, task handles , choke holds and other handles any kind.

The aim of the various techniques is to put the opponent in a position that is unfavorable for him and then to render him immobile and / or force him to give up. Grappling can also be combined with punches and kicks .

The natural instinct leads a person to want to slow down the situation during an attack by trying to grab the opponent. A common result of such a situation is grappling, which makes it possible to control the opponent's movements. By developing principles and rules (e.g. the prohibition of punches and kicks), various competitions and martial arts, martial arts such as Luta Livre , Nihon Jujutsu , Judo , Glíma , wrestling , Shuaijiao , Qin Na , Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu emerged , Aikidō , Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu etc.

Elements of these types of combat are usually also parts of other systems. Some martial arts have their own names for grappling. In Eskrima z. For example, grappling is called dumog , in many Wushu styles it is called Qin Na in high Chinese and Kum Na in Cantonese .

Sticky hands

The sticky hands method is also a form of grappling. You can find it as "Chi Sao" for example in Wing Chun Kung Fu. The Tuishou in Taijiquan (western Tai Chi) is called "pushing hands" . In many Kung Fu styles the “sticky hands” serve as an introduction to covering an opponent in a duel. The aim is to overcome the punching and kicking distance in order to be able to use throws , levers and strangleholdings .

Grappling in arms combat

In many Chinese Wushu styles, in traditional Kenjutsu, Aiki-jūjutsu, Aikidō, Koryū Jūjutsu, Hapkido and in some Kali , Arnis , Eskrima styles etc., grappling is also used when both opponents are armed.

Differences between grappling and martial arts

Grappling is in contrast to martial arts with a strong emphasis on punching and kicking, such as B. Taekwondo , boxing , kickboxing and some karate styles, in which grabbing and throwing the opponent is (almost) completely prohibited or not taught.

Competitions

In 2008, the world wrestling association FILA held the first world grappling championships in Lucerne . There are two types of competition, the so-called with Gi , in which a Keikogi is fought, and the NoGi , in which the athletes wear pants and a shirt. In 2010, European championships were held for the first time in Gorlice , Poland, in which, in addition to the two variants, the full contact version Combat was fought.

The North American Grappling Association (NAGA), which has over 400 grappling tournaments since it was founded in 1995, is the world's largest association of grapplers with over 200,000 members and is also the largest organizer .
