Luta Livre ( Portuguese: Luta = fight and livre = free ) is a Brazilian martial art . Like judo , wrestling , sambo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , it is counted among the grappling disciplines that have enjoyed increasing popularity in the recent past due to their success in mixed martial arts competitions. Literally translated, Luta Livre means "free fight", but is actually a fixed term for wrestling , which can be traced back to its roots in the English catch wrestling .

history

The founder of Luta Livre is Euclydes "Tatu" Hatem, who began to teach his variant of catch wrestling in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1920s . With her fighting style focused on ground fighting and task grips , Tatu and his students enjoyed great success in Vale Tudo competitions. There quickly developed an intense rivalry to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu , which was based on similar principles, but was mainly practiced by members of the upper class , who viewed Luta Livre as a martial art of the lower class . Since the 1990s, however, the once bitter hostility decreased significantly due to the internationalization of the BJJ . In 1995 Luta Livre was brought to Germany by Daniel D'Dane , where it is still widely used, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia . In contrast to the BJJ, the Luta Livre is trained without keikogi and a strong focus is placed on leg levers ( leg locks ).
