Rousimar Palhares (born February 20, 1980 in Dores do Indaiá , Minas Gerais ) is a Brazilian MMA fighter and submission wrestler . He is best known for his leg locks (leg levers), but also notorious for not letting go of task grips even after knocking off the opponent, which caused some controversy. He is also known by his nickname "Toquinho", which means "tree stump" in Portuguese . Palhares competed mainly in the middleweight and welterweight classes and holds black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Luta Livre .

Career

Palhares, who grew up in poor conditions in rural Brazil, completed his first MMA fight in 2004. In 2008 he was signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship , the largest MMA organization in the world, and won his debut fight at UFC 84 against Ivan Salaverry by an armbar. In September 2008 he lost to superstar Dan Henderson at UFC 88 on points. In March 2010, during the fight against Tomasz Drwal, the first controversy about Palhares arose when he did not immediately let go of a heel hook even after the referee intervened and was then suspended for 90 days.

On his return in September 2010, he suffered his first premature knockout defeat against Nate Marquardt . After the fight, Palhares assumed Marquardt to have rubbed himself with a lubricant in order to more easily escape the submissions. After the ring doctor and the present commission examined this and found nothing, Marquardt was finally awarded the victory. After the fight, Palhares apologized for the false allegations.

After three wins in a row, he received two more heavy knockout defeats against Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard , whereupon Palhares switched from middleweight to welterweight. There he won his first fight against Mike Pierce in October 2013 with a heel hook after only 31 seconds, but was then dismissed by the UFC because he again did not solve the submission in time and thus seriously injured the opponent.

Palhares continued his career at the World Series of Fighting , where he won the welterweight championship in the first fight against Steve Carl , again by a heel hook. In August 2015, however, Palhares was also fired from the WSOF because he held a surrender hold longer than allowed for the third time, this time a Kimura against Jake Shields . On May 22, 2016, Palhares surprisingly lost at Venator FC III against Emil Weber Meek after only 45 seconds by knockout.

In 2011 the notorious grappler also competed in the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships , where he immediately won the silver medal in the class up to 88 kilograms.
