Jake Shields (born January 9, 1979 in Mountain Ranch , California ) is an American mixed martial arts fighter who fights in the middleweight division. He is a Rumble on the Rock Middleweight Champion. Jake Shields is the first and last elite XC welterweight champion. He is also a former Shooto World Champion and Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. He has trained extensively with Cesar Gracie and is a member of the Scrap Pack, which also includes Dave Terrell , Nick Diaz , Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez .

Shields is the current third-placed middleweight from Sherdog and fourth from MMAWeekly. He is (as of 2010) Sherdog's ninth-place pound-4-pound fighter in the world.

In July 2010, Shields left Strikeforce and signed a contract with his new employer, the UFC . On October 23, he made his debut against Martin Kampmann and defeated him on points.

In 2012 he was suspended for six months for doping .

Shields is a vegetarian and supports the animal rights organization PETA .
