Nicholas Robert Diaz (born August 2, 1983 in Stockton , California ) is a former American MMA fighter who was under contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) , Strikeforce and Pride FC . He mostly competed at welterweight and is a former welterweight strikeforce champion. Diaz has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Cesar Gracie, with whom he has been training since he was 16. His brother Nate Diaz is also an MMA fighter.

Life before career

Diaz was born in Stockton , California and grew up without his biological father. His mother made him take up swimming. In his only year in high school, he was part of the swim team. Diaz is grateful to his mother for this, as swimming helped him get good cardio.

He came to martial arts because he was bullied and wanted to be able to defend himself against his bullies. His interest in mixed martial arts came through Royce Gracie , whom he saw fighting at the time. Diaz came to Cesar Gracie through MMA fighter Steve Heath and began to train under him.

Mixed martial arts career

Beginnings

He made his professional MMA debut on August 31, 2001, 29 days after his 18th birthday, defeating Mike Wick in the first round with a triangle choke . In his second fight Diaz was able to win a title by defeating Chris Lytle on points for the IFC United States Welterweight Championship . He then took part in the King-of-the-Mountain tournament and moved into the final after two wins. In this he was subject to Jeremy Jackson by TKO in the first round, which he came to his first defeat.

After another win, Diaz suffered his second defeat, this time against Kuniyoshi Hironaka. In his next fight, he won the WEC Welterweight Championship by forcing Joe Hurley to surrender in Round 1. After that, Diaz had to defend his IFC United States Welterweight Championship against Jeremy Jackson, who had previously defeated him. This time Diaz was able to win and thus compensate for this defeat, he also won the IFC Americas Welterweight Championship and the ISKA-MMA Americas Welterweight Championship .

First and second UFC run

Diaz was signed by Ultimate Fighting Championship and met in his debut for the organization again on Jeremy Jackson, which Diaz could defeat again, this time by armbar in the third round at UFC 44 on September 26, 2003. At UFC 47 on April 2, 2004, he defeated Robbie Lawler by knockout in the second round. Diaz dominated Lawler although he was previously considered an outsider. Diaz played his next fight at UFC 49 on August 21, 2004 against Karo Parisyan, which he lost on points. After two wins against Drew Fickett and Koji Oishi, he lost on November 5, 2005 against Diego Sanchez on points. After two more losses by point decision against Joe Riggs and Sean Sherk, he was released. However, Diaz was taken after another victory on points over Ray Steinbeisser at ICFO 1 - Stockton on May 13, 2006 by the UFC again under contract. Diaz won the first two fights on his return. First he defeated Josh Neer by giving up and then Gleison Tibau by TKO.

Promotion outside the UFC

Diaz's contract expired after this fight and he did not renew it and instead signed with Gracie Fighting Championship , but a fight did not materialize and he signed with Pride FC . Diaz made his Pride debut on February 24, 2007 at Pride 33 - Second Coming against Takanori Gomi in the lightweight. Diaz forced Gomi to give up with a gogoplata. However, Diaz tested positive for marijuana, which led the commission to change the fight to a no contest.

On September 18, 2007 he won at EliteXC - Uprising on points against Mike Aina. Diaz then received a title fight for the EliteXC Lightweight Championship against KJ Noons. Noons won the fight after the fight was abandoned due to a cut Diaz. After this fight he started again in the welterweight division. His return to welterweight he was able to complete with a win by TKO over Katsua Inoue at Dream FC . Diaz had two more wins at EliteXC over Muhsin Corbbrey and Thomas Denny, both through TKO.

On April 11, 2009 he made his Strikeforce debut against Frank Shamrock in a catchweight of 179 lbs. Diaz won by TKO in the second round. His next fight was again in catchweight, this time 180 lbs. His opponent was Scott Smith, whom he defeated by giving up with the rear naked choke in the third round. Diaz received a title shot against Marius Zaromskis on January 30, 2010 for the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship . Diaz won by TKO in round 1. In May of the same year he played a fight for Dream FC against Hayato Sakurai, which he forced to give up in the first round with an armbar. Diaz defended his Strikeforce Welterweight Championship on October 9, 2010 against KJ Noons. He defeated this on points and thus compensated for his loss to Noons in 2007. Diaz's next title defense followed against Evangelista Santos January 29, 2011. Diaz forced Santos to give up with an armbar. Diaz could also win his next title defense by knocking out Paul Daley in the first round.

Return to the UFC

Diaz was signed by the UFC and should compete against Georges St-Pierre for his UFC Welterweight Championship on October 29, 2011 at UFC 137 in the main fight. Since he did not appear at several press conferences, the fight for the title was withdrawn from him, instead Carlos Condit should receive the fight, due to an injury to St-Pierre, the fight could not take place. This moved Diaz back into the main fight, as a fight against BJ Penn had previously been scheduled for the same event. He won the fight on points and should get another title fight. Since St-Pierre was injured again, an interim title fight against Carlos Condit was set. The fight took place on February 4, 2012 and Diaz lost on points. He was later tested positive for marijuana and suspended for six months.

Diaz's next fight took place on March 16, 2013 against the then title holder Georges St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship. He lost the fight on points.

In 2015, Diaz passed a positive doping test for the third time in his career in his last fight so far . He tested positive for marijuana and was banned until April 2018.
