European Broadcasting Union
The European Broadcasting Union ( English European Broadcasting Union , EBU ; French Union Européenne de Radio-Télévision , UER ) is an association of currently 72 radio stations in 56 countries in Europe , North Africa and the Near East with headquarters in Geneva (May 2016). In addition, there are around half as many associated stations from around the world (33 from 21 countries).
President is the general manager of the francophone Belgian broadcaster RTBF , Jean-Paul Philippot, while Anna Maria Tarantola from the Italian RAI is vice-president . The full-time director general of the EBU is Noel Curran , the former director general of the Irish RTÉ .
history
The EBU's predecessor was the World Broadcasting Union ( Internationale Rundfunkunion ; English: International Broadcasting Union , IBU; French: Union Internationale de Radiophonie , UIR) with its headquarters in Geneva and a technical office in Brussels (1925-50).
The European Broadcasting Union was founded on February 12, 1950 at a conference in Torquay ( United Kingdom ) with the aim of building a network for the exchange of news films. Furthermore, the EBU is to promote and standardize technical developments in the radio and television sector. Founding members were 23 broadcasters from Europe and the Mediterranean region .
In 1953, the EBU broadcast the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as the first international live broadcast . The first “official” Eurovision broadcast was the broadcast of the Daffodil Festival on June 6, 1954 from Montreux . In 1956 the first Eurovision Song Contest was broadcast .
In 1993 the EBU merged with its Eastern European counterpart OIRT .
In November 2011 Andorra terminated its membership due to financial difficulties. However, this plan is no longer pursued, which is why Andorra is still a member.

Radio
In 1991, the radio play "was the meeting in Valladolid " the British writer Anthony Burgess ( A Clockwork Orange, dt. A Clockwork Orange ) produced as a commission of the EBU by all its member countries in their own language and at the same time with all broadcasters of the ARD urgesendet .

Several EBU television stations jointly operate the worldwide news channel Euronews .
One of the best-known EBU productions is the annual Eurovision Song Contest , which is produced by the country's broadcaster that provided the previous year's winner.
From 1965 to 1999, the EBU broadcast the game show Spiel ohne Grenzen . She also produces the Eurovision Young Dancers competition as well as various children's programs and documentaries on her own .
In addition, the EBU operates a satellite channel through which the member stations make their own (video) material available to each other.
Theme melodies
The EBU uses different melodies to identify its programs. The best known are the Eurovision fanfare based on a motif from the prelude to the Te Deum by the French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier and the Euroradio fanfare based on a motif from the overture to the opera L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi .
Technical developments
The FLAC format is used to transmit audio files to the individual member countries. In addition, the organization is actively involved in the research and development of new standards such as DAB , DVB and HDTV . a. the Radio Data System (RDS).
Members
As of August 2019, the EBU has 72 full members from 56 countries and 33 associated members from 21 other countries - including Canada , Japan , Mexico , Brazil , India , Hong Kong and the United States . Most of the full members are public broadcasters or private broadcasters with a public information mandate.
In Germany , the EBU includes the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF ; Austria is represented by ORF , Switzerland by SRG SSR and South Tyrol by Rai Südtirol .
Georgia has both associate and full member broadcasters.
