euronews is a pan-European television broadcaster based in Lyon . It went on the air on January 1, 1993 with a news program.

Founded as a joint property of a number of EBU broadcasters , Naguib Sawiris' Media Globe Networks now holds the majority of the broadcasters.

program

Program structure

News is broadcast several times an hour. The previous subdivision into blocks of news, sports and business reports no longer exists. The program also includes magazine programs, reports and interviews.

A moderated news program was broadcast from 2018. The German-language version was called “Euronews am Abend” and was broadcast at 19:00 CET and repeated several times. The last broadcast for the time being was in mid-January 2020.

The best-known format of euronews is No Comment (without comment), which presents current images from all over the world without any spoken comment and enables the viewer to form a judgment solely through the power of the images, although there is an implicit commentary through image selection, perspective and editing remains. This format is known as No Comment Live when broadcast live. No Comment is also available as a video podcast.

The program is supplemented by stock exchange prices (markets), the world weather just before half an hour and the European weather (meteo europe) before the hour. There is also the meteo airport format (not to be confused with meteo world), which displays weather data from international airports. Important events such as elections or breaking news are broadcast directly.

reception

The station broadcast its program simultaneously in English , French , German , Italian , Portuguese , Spanish , Russian , Arabic , Turkish , Persian , Ukrainian , Greek and Hungarian until May 10, 2017 and by then it was around 350 million Households in 155 countries. From May 10, 2017, however, the previous multiplex process , which had been in use since the station was founded in 1993 and meant that there was a single video signal in several languages, was abandoned and replaced by twelve premium editions of their own name on several platforms. Since then, the overlays have been shown in the respective language. The twelve different versions can be received in different ways: euronews is available in German, English (including HD), French, Greek, Hungarian, Italian and Russian both via satellite and IPTV. The Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish versions are only broadcast via IPTV. Euronews is only available online in Arabic and Persian. From 2018 euronews will also be available in North and South America via IP networks.

The broadcaster broadcasts its program via antenna , cable , satellite , internet via live stream and via the platform Livestation . It can also be received as a live stream via Freenet TV connect .

In addition, euronews maintains several regional language channels on YouTube , where contributions from the current program are regularly available for access.

Euronews can also be received on Internet television via platforms such as Zattoo .

production

offices

euronews has offices in Brussels, Cairo, Doha , London, Paris, Kiev, Istanbul, Dubai, Washington and Beijing (since the end of 2011).

Ownership

The Media Globe Networks of the Egyptian entrepreneur Naguib Sawiris have held a 53% stake in euronews since 2015 , and the US media group NBCUniversal has held a 25% stake since 2016 ; the remaining 22% belong to the following member stations of the European Broadcasting Union , which until 2015 owned all shares in euronews. In 2017, the company AD from the United Arab Emirates took over the euronews stake in the amount of two percent that had previously been held by Turkish television (TRT).

euronews is trying to win Germany over to participate. So far, this has failed mainly due to the complicated legal situation. In Germany, broadcasting is the responsibility of the federal states , so that the state governments must be convinced to join .

Cooperation with the EU

A contract between the EU Commission and euronews provides for the broadcasting of EU-relevant contributions from events in the member states and EU accession candidates as well as in some other countries. In return, euronews is supported by the EU with EUR 15 million annually. For this reason, the station sees itself exposed to criticism that it would not broadcast neutrally, but rather put the EU in a positive light and broadcast its contributions in the interests of the EU.

history

euronews headquarters in Lyon

On June 4, 2008, the brand identity was revised by euronews, whereby a change to the 16: 9 widescreen format was expected in addition to a new logo . In May 2009 the Romanian Lucian Sârb took over the post of editor-in-chief and his compatriot Peter Barabas took over the post of editor-in-chief in September of the same year. Since January 11, 2011, broadcasts have been in the correct 16: 9 widescreen format. With the changeover, the station also received a new on-air presence. In December 2011, Michael Peters became the new CEO and successor to Philippe Cayla, who has held the position since 2003. Cayla took over the management of Euronews Development and became a member of the euronews supervisory board.

In 2011, a moderated program was first broadcast under the name iTalk. It was an interactive format that gave viewers the opportunity to ask questions about Europe. The broadcast was recorded in a studio set up in the European Parliament and moderated by Alex Taylor.

The Greek-language version, which went on air at the end of 2012, will not be produced at the headquarters in France, but in Athens . The same applies to the Hungarian-language program (since 2013), which is produced in Budapest .

euronews primarily used news agency reports from the dapd news agency , which ceased its service in April 2013.

On October 8, 2013, a new on-air design was introduced to mark the 20th anniversary of euronews . For this purpose, some intros have been revised and the time display has been resumed (now various local times alternately). In addition, important events should now be emphasized more strongly.

On March 19, 2015, it became known that euronews' broadcasting license in Ukraine would be revoked by the Ukrainian media regulator. The reason given was a lack of influence by the authorities on the Ukrainian-language program. From December 2015 euronews broadcast again in Ukraine. In October 2015, the station left its previous headquarters in Écully and moved to a new broadcasting building in the La Confluence district of Lyon .

In April 2016, the sister broadcaster Africanews, based in Pointe-Noire ( Republic of the Congo ), started operations. On May 17, 2016, the station introduced a new logo and design.

On May 10, 2017, euronews launched twelve versions of its program. As a result, in addition to the audio tracks, the television signal is now also broadcast in the respective languages. This goes back to a new revised concept from euronews. The German variant has therefore changed the satellite frequency. The Ukrainian-language service that euronews had had since 2009 was discontinued in May 2017.

In 2018, as a result of the entry of the US media group NBCUniversal as a shareholder, euronews expanded its English-language program, which was named Euronews World . In May 2018, the French-American journalist Françoise Champey, who grew up in Algeria and Tunisia , became the new editor-in-chief, succeeding Lucian Sârb. The establishment of euronews Albania was announced in November 2018, broadcasting operations with 150 employees at the headquarters in Tirana started on November 21, 2019 after nine-month test runs, and euronews Albania set up external editorial offices in Skopje and Pristina . In mid-July 2019, the Serbian media company HD-WIN , which belongs to Telekom Srbija , agreed with euronews to take over the name of the station in order to set up the news channel euronews Serbia as a licensee. Following the same principle of licensing the name euronews, an agreement was reached with the Georgian telecommunications company Silknet to set up a news channel (euronews Georgia), as before with the Albanian and Serbian companies.

On April 20, 2020 it was announced that NBC had sold its shares to the majority owner of EuroNews, the media group Media Globe Networks. The reason is the upcoming broadcast of NBC Sky World News .
