La Confluence is a district of Lyon in the 2nd arrondissement at the confluence of the Rhone and Saône rivers .

history

The area between the Rhone and Saône rivers covers 150 hectares and was created between 1770 and 1850 through land reclamation. Industry, trade and transport facilities, storage facilities and transshipment points for goods were located here.

Under Louis XIII. the Château de Pierre Scize became the prison of Lyon, in 1789 the prisoners were released and the building demolished. At the beginning of the 19th century, Lyon had two prisons: the Palais de Roanne next to the Lyon Cathedral and the Maison Saint-Joseph , in the Ainay district . At the same named Antoine Michel Perrache Promenade a detention center was built after its location, the Quartier Saint-Paul , Saint-Paul was called. From 1865 adults were imprisoned here, while young people were imprisoned in the Maison Saint-Joseph . The prisons determined the character of the Perrache . In 2008, as part of the gentrification , the prisons were relocated from the city of Lyon to the surrounding area, to Corbas and Meyzieu .

The railway line between Saint-Étienne and Lyon , inaugurated in 1832, ran over La Confluence and the La Mulatière bridge in the south of the district . In 1833 a gas works started operations. The Perrache slaughterhouse was completed in 1840 and the animals were transported by ship, on foot or by cart. In the 1920 the slaughterhouse was relocated to the Gerland district. The building was demolished in 1933.

Perrache train station around 1900

In 1857 the Perrache train station was inaugurated.

In 1926, the Rambaud freight port was opened. In the 1950s and 1960s in particular, it was an important transshipment point, especially for goods such as salt, sugar, wine and other food items as well as coal. The port was in operation until 1991. In 2003 the former sugar storage facility became the “La Sucrière” event and cultural center. Today, remnants of the port facilities also remind of the history of the district.

In 1961, the Lyon wholesale market was established, which previously had its location in the city center. The area of the market extended to 24 hectares. In 2008 the wholesale market was relocated to Corbas. In 2014, renovation work began on the site, including for apartments.

In 1969 the ice rink was inaugurated, which has 4,200 seats and is the home of the Lyon Hockey Club .

Building "Orange Cube" (Cube Orange)

In 1999, a comprehensive project to redesign the district was presented, which was to turn the former industrial and commercial location into a residential and business district. Work began in 2003. By 2014, 80 percent of the work in the first phase of conversion, particularly on the side of the district facing the Saône, had been completed. The second construction phase, scheduled for completion in 2025, is particularly tailored to the areas near the Rhone. The implementation of the project will double the size of Lyon's city center by 2025. Important stages in the transformation were the construction of the editorial building for the newspaper Le Progrès (construction work ended in 2007), the inauguration of the water landscape with the town harbor, walking paths and lounging areas in 2010, and the completion of the town hall of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in 2011 , the opening of the shopping center in 2012, the inauguration of the Confluence Museum in December 2014 and the relocation of the television station Euronews 2015. The station has its editorial rooms in a building called the “Green Cube” (Cube Vert), which is also designed by the architect Dominique Jakob and Brendan MacFarlane was designed like the "Orange Cube" (Cube Orange), which is only a few hundred meters away and contains business premises.

Between 2003 and 2015 the population of the district rose by around 3,000 to 10,000.
