history
The town of Meyzieu originally goes back to the village of Bardieu . The village has Celtic origins and was shaped by the Gallo-Roman era and the Middle Ages. In the 11th century a castle was built near Bardieu. The residents built a church at the foot of the castle and settled there. This is how the village of Meyzieu came into being. In the following years the castle and the village were owned by different rulers. In 1548 the French King Heinrich stayed here in Meyzieu. During the 18th century the place was a rural village where buckwheat, oats, rye and hemp were grown. There were also mulberry trees for sericulture. In the course of the French Revolution , the lords of the castle were forced to flee in 1789. In 1790 the reorganization of the place began, Meyzieu got a mayor, became a municipality of the Isère department and the capital of a canton. At the end of the 18th century, the first Rhône bridge was built, which expanded the trading opportunities. In 1881 the community gained a railway connection, in 1895 the Jonage Canal was opened on the other side of the Rhône, and in 1910 a tram finally opened in Meyzieu. Agriculture also dominated the community in the 1920s and 1930s. On February 27, 1950, the castle, which was now a retirement home, finally collapsed. In the 1960s and 1970s, settlements for returnees from North Africa were built, which led to a sharp increase in the population. Another decisive factor for a strong population growth in the following period was the expansion of the industrial zone around Lyon. In 1967 the municipality moved from the Isère department to the Rhône department. This happened due to administrative difficulties, as the greater Lyon area spread over the Départements Rhône , Isère and Loire until 1967 . In 1969 the municipality became part of the Lyon agglomeration. Meyzieu belonged to the canton of Meyzieu until 2015 .
traffic
The community has a train station. Meyzieu also has a slip road to the A 46 .
