Saint-Genis-Laval is a French municipality with 21,217 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Métropole de Lyon in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lyon . Saint-Genis-Laval was also the main town (chef-lieu) of the canton of Saint-Genis-Laval until 2015 .

geography

The municipality of Saint-Genis-Laval has the character of a suburb and forms a closed settlement area with other surrounding municipalities and the city of Lyon . The center of Saint-Genis-Laval is two kilometers west of the Rhone and about six kilometers southwest of Lyon city center.

history

The city, whose name is derived from Saint Genesius of Rome , was first mentioned in 807 in a deed of donation from Archbishop Leidrade to the Saint-Romain and Saint-Genis hospital . In 984, Saint-Genis was first mentioned as a parish of the Archdiocese of Lyon.

At the beginning of the 13th century the ending de la vallée ("from the valley") was added to distinguish the city from the other existing places with the same name. In the 15th century the name was changed to Laval .

On August 20, 1944, about 120 men and women, mostly members of the Resistance , were transported by the Gestapo under the orders of Klaus Barbie from the dissolved Lyon Fort Montluc prison to Saint-Genis-Laval, there to a house in the former Fort de Côte -Lorette driven and shot with machine guns. The murderers then set fire to the house. This war crime became known as the Saint-Genis-Laval massacre , and in 1954 Barbie was sentenced to death in absentia by a French court.

Attractions

The city has several castles, a large park with the ruins of the old castle and a fort. In the commune of Saint-Genis-Laval there is also the astronomical observatory of Lyon.

Culture

The city has had a cultural center with a cinema for 300 people since 1995. Due to the large number of international residents, there is an attractive range of foreign cultural events.

Several industrial zones with around 650 companies offering over 3800 jobs and a shopping center are located in the city.
