Ampuis is a French commune in the department of Rhône in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . 2713 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), who are called Ampuisaits , live on an area of 1,557 hectares .

Ampuis lies on the orographic right side of the Rhône , between the municipalities of Condrieu and Vienne . The municipality is part of the Pilat Regional Nature Park .
history
The name Ampuis is said to go back to the Roman Emporium (in German marketplace or trading center). Viticulture has been intensively practiced at Ampuis since the Roman conquest . The appellation Côte Rôtie , whose main municipality is Ampuis, is considered the oldest wine-growing region of the northern Rhône and thus of the former Gaul . In addition, the winemakers are allowed to market their wines under the qualitatively less strict designation of origin Côtes du Rhône .
