Ternay is a French commune with 5,514 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Rhône in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Lyon and the canton of Saint-Symphorien-d'Ozon .

geography

Ternay extends for about 5 km along the left, eastern bank of the Rhône . It is about 15 km south of Lyon , the nearest major city.

history

Ternay was mentioned as the city "Tanernaco" as early as the 10th century. Legend has it that St. Mayol, the fourth abbot of Cluny, healed a blind man here and miraculously made a well well up at the foot of the hill. The water had a reputation as a medicine for diseases of the eyes. The place therefore also became known as a place of pilgrimage. The parish church was the oldest Benedictine abbey built by the monks of Cluny Abbey .

Attractions

Sights include the ruins of the Romanesque Saint-Mayol church from the 12th century, where concerts are still occasionally held today, and the accompanying Saint-Mayol fountain .

The castle Château de la Porte was preserved , construction of which began in the 16th century. Today the castle is used as a cultural center.

Infrastructure

The Autoroute A 7 - Autoroute du Soleil, which intersects with the A 46 and the A 47 in the south of the municipality , runs through Ternay . Ternay has access to the motorways via the Chasse-sur-Rhône junction on the A 47.

Ternay does not have its own train station, although the Lyon – Marseille line crosses the municipality. This is also where the first line from Lyon to Avignon, opened in 1856 by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Lyon à la Méditerranée (LM), crosses the Rhône on the Viaduc de la Méditerranée (modernized in 1950) . The LGV Rhône-Alpes , today's high-speed line for between Paris and Marseille trains running TGV , is located 20 km to the east but well outside of its territory.
