Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon is a French city with 22,012 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Métropole de Lyon in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located on the western city limits of Lyon , but forms an independent municipality itself.

The name of the place is composed of the name of Saint Fides of Agen (French: Sainte-Foy ) and the close proximity to the city of Lyon. Saint Fides was a 12-year-old girl who was beheaded in 303 during the reign of the Roman emperor Maximian on the orders of the then proconsul Dacianus. The inhabitants of the city call themselves Fidésiens .

The city offers a pleasant climate, lots of greenery and the city center is no more than 20 minutes' drive from Lyon by car; alternatively, you can use the local public transport services by bus. The remains of a Roman aqueduct can still be seen in the city , the streets and squares are paved and quite narrow.

Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon is slightly higher than Lyon, just south of the neo-Byzantine style basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière , above the eastern confluence of the Saône into the Rhone , and about five kilometers south-southwest of the city center of Lyon. The city is bordered by the Yzeron Valley and the city of Francheville to the west and the city of Oullins to the south .

The place, near the Gallic city of Lugdunum, was certainly also settled in Roman times. One of the longest Roman viaducts to supply the city of Lugdunum, remains of which can still be seen, led across the area of ​​the village.

The oldest known mention of Sainte-Foy dates back to 1170, when the place with a church belonged to the canons of Saint-Just. In 1189, Sainte-Foy became dependent on the cathedral chapter of Saint-Jean until the Revolution . In 1834 a city school was opened and in 1835 a horse-drawn bus service was set up. There has been a weekly market since 1840. After the old church building had also been completely demolished that year, the new parish church was consecrated again in the same place in 1843.

In 1844 the creator of the hand puppet Guignol Laurent Mourguet died . A cinema was built in the house where he was born, bearing his wife's name (Cinéma Jeanne Mourguet) .

From 1880 onwards, viticulture, which was damaged by phylloxera, lost its importance and was increasingly replaced by fruit growing. In 1885 the district of La Mulatière became independent. A hospital was built in 1893 and street lighting was installed from 1894. From 1974 the establishment of the pharmaceutical company Laboratoires Boiron began in Sainte Foy. In 1986 Pope John Paul II visited the city.

Until 2015, Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon was the capital of the canton of Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon .

Sainte Foy can refer to more than 300 companies and important industries, especially in the pharmaceutical sector. The Laboratoires Boiron SA are among the better-known companies in homeopathy. In the Rhône region, Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon is also known for its wines.
