Saint-Romain-en-Gal is about 24 kilometers south of Lyon on the Rhône . Saint-Romain-en-Gal is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Seyssuel in the north, Vienne in the east, Sainte-Colombe in the south and southeast, Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône in the south and Loire-sur-Rhône in the west.

The A7 autoroute and the former route nationale 86 (today's D386) run through the municipality .
