Condrieu is a French municipality with 3897 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Rhône in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Condrieu is the southernmost municipality in the Rhône department. It is located on the right bank of the Rhone River , about eleven kilometers south of the city of Vienne and 44 kilometers south of the city of Lyon . The municipality is part of the Pilat Regional Nature Park .
history
According to some historians, Condrieu has existed since the 3rd century BC. Pliny the Elder reported that viticulture already existed in the region. The city was fortified at the end of the 12th century AD and provided with a city wall. All that remains of the fortifications is a tower that overlooks the city.
Viticulture in Condrieu
Since 1940 Condrieu has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée . Only white wine is made from the Viognier grape variety , which grows on soils with a granite underground. The 110 hectares of approved vineyards are cultivated by around 90 winemakers and are spread across the municipalities of Condrieu, Chavanay, Malleval, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, Saint-Pierre-de-Boeuf, Vérin and Limony, which are within a 15 km lie. The yield is limited to 37 hl / ha, an average of 4,100 hl of wine are produced and marketed each year.
The wines can be fragrant, with nuances of violet , peach or apricot and should be drunk young. Lately attempts have been made with the expansion in barriques and with late harvest.
