geography

Vernaison is about 15 kilometers south of Lyon on the Rhone in the Métropole de Lyon , in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lyon and the Canton of Irigny . Its inhabitants are called Vernaisonais .

Vernaison is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Irigny in the north, Solaize in the east, Sérézin-du-Rhône in the southeast, Millery in the south and southwest and Charly in the west.

history

The oldest surviving documentary mention of Vernaison comes from 1153.

The Trésor de Vernaison (Treasure Find of Vernaison) is an archaeological hoard that was discovered in 1856. It contains numerous bronze objects such as ax blades, lance tips and pieces of chain and dates to around 1100 BC. The find is exhibited today in the Musée gallo-romain de Fourvière in Lyon.

On September 21, 1945, a serious rail accident occurred near Vernaison when two trains collided. 30 people died, 105 were also injured.

Vernaison belonged to the canton of Irigny until 2015 .

Vernaison has had a station on the Saint-Étienne – Lyon line , the second line in France , since 1832 . This line was later integrated into the Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache railway . Today he is by trains of TER Auvergne Rhône-Alpes of the connection Givors-Ville - Lyon-Perrache served.

The territory of the commune is part of the Coteaux du Lyonnais wine-growing region .
