The Métropole de Lyon is a local authority in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France , which combines the functions of a department and the tasks of a municipal association in the greater Lyon area . The metropolis emerged from the former Communauté urbaine de Lyon , also called Grand Lyon 'Greater Lyon'.

The previous institution existed since 1969. Around 1.3 million people live in the metropolis on 534 square kilometers in 59 municipalities .

History of origin

On January 1, 2015, the communes of the Communauté urbaine de Lyon were spun off from the Département Rhône , at the same time the communal association became a regional body with special status called Métropole de Lyon , which performs the tasks of a department and a municipal association.

Administrative structure

The Metropole Lyon department consists of part of the Lyon arrondissement with its 59 municipalities.
